Stihl MSA 160C

I visited my local Stihl dealer today to check out the battery powered chain saw and he gave me one to demo for a week or two. Looking forward to putting it to work next week. I'll let you know how it goes. He's had good feedback on it so far.

It is not a "pro" saw. I made a few cuts with it on a removal job and I was impressed with the power and torque. It's obviously not a 200T but it performed better than expected. My purpose for having this in the fleet would be for those few jobs where noise is a major issue, such as near offices.

I got to try one of these out today. I was surprised too.

The Stihl rep mentioned something about them having a special coming up soon on the saw, battery, and charger.

It really has the Fisher Price look going on...not saying anything bad about the saw just the looks ;-)

Maybe Stihl could build it with a fake muffler and fake cooling fins. They could even make a bracket so you can put a card against the chain to make that real chain saw sound while cutting!

Just kidding, scrat! It does look a bit wimpy, but we used one to cut apart our 16" DBH Cedar log at the end of the NE Grows show and she ripped right through it. These electric saws are NOT to be overlooked. I can't wait to get one for full-time use!...top handle of course. :)

That was too funny Oceans! But even if they add the fake muffler and fake cooling fins, even make a bracket so you can put a card against the chain to make that real chain saw sound while cutting...which I would really enjoy!

I am holding out for the Husky version and looking forward to adding it to the arsenal. Only fear is that it may not get the deserved respect of being a real chainsaw and the current PPE for chainsaw protection is useless against its ferocious appetite. May unfortunately toll up a few more injuries than its gas counter part.

I hear you...the torque on these is ridiculously high and I'm not sure current saw protective clothing would stop one.

I think the battery technology is nice in that the power will remain constant until the battery is dead. The graph looks like a cliff at the end. The only thing that would concern me is being in a critical cut and having the battery die. I think a super accurate power meter would be a nice feature...although for the size of these saws, one would probably not be cutting into big, heavy wood so the cut might not be so critical after all...just sayin'.

I also talked to the Husky guys at 'Grows'...about the top handled saw. I noted that some guys are running them out of bar oil since they never have to fuel up. They really took note of that and thought up a low oil level sensor that would prevent running without bar oil.

I'm just looking forward to the not so distant future, when we can have more battery powered tools with real capabilities. Then we can go home to our wives with that "half day smell"!
