So I started to ripp apart a 441 to replace one side of the crank case. Pain in the A$$. The saw is currently in many peices but I still can not get the two sides of the cases to split. The local saw shop said that I would not need to pull th crank out completely only from the side that needs replacing. Any advice on this procedure would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

You can make a splitting tool from a piece of channel. Cut a slot that will slip over the bar studs and then drill a hole for the crankshaft end. Remove all the case bolts, push out the dowel pins, and use a 2-jaw puller that will hook up to the channel that you have bolted to the case. The bearings can be pressed out of the bad case half. A little heat will help install them easier but they can be pressed in dry as well. PM me and I can give you some more info regarding the specs. Once the bearings are installed and the case is pulled together the crank will have to be centered. Hit one end of the crank with a brass hammer or a dead blow until the crank spins freely. Do this before the seals are installed. The seals put a good amoune of resistance on the spinning assembly and make it difficult to tell if things are centered.
