Split tail length?

I just went to the local West Marine and found that they have a good selection of New England rope. I bought 15' of 5/16" sta-set "yacht braid", white w/ red streak 3000# tensile. Wanted to make sure there wasn't anything wrong with this for Distel. Also double or triple fishermans and how much tail/tag left from said fisherman, 1"??

Leave a couple inches at least. Keep an eye on it, too. I often see the tails on mine shrink as I climb. It might go a few weeks, but eventually I have to untie and retie the fisherperson's noose knot.

The sta-set you bought will be very good. You'll have to find the right knot for you, but you shouldn't be sad with it.

Leif,

That stuff will bite hard and be real safe, but I like the next size up- 3/8". I think that the 3/8" still bites good, but releases easier. I'd say use what you bought and then try a small hank of the larger stuff to compare.

i think a triple gives more strength, but then that becomes extraneous mostly as would exceed strength at bend of friction hitch?

i've been favoring 3/8" Tenex at 5K; also lays flat for more grip area and leverages self less in flayinjg flatter around curves i think too.

i think some of the high tech stuff seemed too stiff and wore faster?
