Stumper- well put. The only thing I would change if i'd writtten would be to take out the word "practically" in the satement "Practically any cordage can be spliced in some fashion."
Kathy- the only reason I would be concerned is that just because it is holding you, we are just guessing on the safety ratio. I think we all agree that we could climb on a line with a 400 pound breaking strength...but for how long?
I've broken a few splices that were high-mod spliced as a standard polyester double braid would have been splice. The breaks were in the 50-60% range. Not good- but still strong enough for our application...especially considering these 3/8" ropes had breaking strengths of about 10,000 pounds if splice properly!
Though strong enough, I didn't think it was appropriate to sell splices that are that inefficient.
Finally- Bailout is most definitely splicable with an exposed eye like HRC or Beeline. I know...I have a few!
