Spiking leaners, any advice?

I will admit, all my experience and bravery goes out the window when it comes to this type of situation. I believe I have the experience and conditioning to accomplish spiking a large gnarly leaner but without another tree or good tie in point I pass these up almost 100 percent of the time. I'm talking mostly about a tree that doesn't have other leads to tie into, just a single gnarly leaner I get too much fear for it to be safe. I just wanted to throw that out there because passing it up is another option and I have no problem admitting that. I am terrified of being stuck on the underside and unable to get on top again and running out of strength. But I most do pruning and medium removals with about 5-6 years experience total so I am not as experienced with gnarly removals as you folks.

Question: I came across this on youtube, would this method help much on a leaner ? I thought it was neat but not sure how much this could help or apply here.

Anytime you can create a tie in point which is higher than yourself (even if its just a few feet) you will help to create stability.

listen to this man

think of a pendulum, if your above the tie in, gravity wants you to be under it, if your under it, well, your already under it and cant fall below

Climb any which way you please to reach the ground safely but I have four split tails with thimbles that I spliced myself(7th season lobsterman) and I’d take that all day over any of the fancy stuff.
Hey could you post some photos of your setup? Sounds like you got into tree work in an interesting way and probably do a lot of things differently than I’ve seen.

Whoops replied to the wrong guy!

Used to run the blake off two and a half feet of the boline’s tail but you can’t separate the harness points to weave thru leaders and such. I tie in once to this system and then it’s a game of slinging beaners up and over the next whirl or so. Extremely versatile and increase mobility and decreases the probability of having to tie in twice. Also doubles as a secondary buck strap in a way. I’ve been in love with it since a colorado cowboy showed me over a decade ago. My cousin won’t switch he’s ten yrs stronger in the industry than I am, admits the benefits of it but what can I say? He’s way more old school than me however he is into bull rings and redirects all of a sudden…….

Why on earth would you think that any modern climbing mechanical would bend, or break, or jam up... or in any way be less safe than a little piece of rope? They're not made out of beer cans and coat hangers.
Easy man, not looking to be belittled here. Just never seen one before this year. You’re obviously hot for the things, I can tell. Remeber when husky xp models were reverse engineered to the point of failing they had to recall?? THAT is why Im asking shit does fail. Just asking a question, obviously as sensitive a subject as steel toe boots

wouldnt a quickie thru the bowline or spliced eye be faster, cheaper, and less to go wrong?
No to all of these. Carabiner can be opened one handed, with a glove. Quickie has two tiny pin detents that would be difficult to manipulate single handed. Quickie is two pieces, each you can drop on accident. everyone has carabiners suitable for this and rings can be had for a few dollars. I have two quickies and use them pretty regular. After seeing this technique, I will for sure be implementing it for a leap frog accent.

Just asking a question...

That's all I was doing, as well. Trying to ascertain how people arrive at the strange notion that fancy, newfangled stuff is somehow inferior to old school technology. It's like being happy climbing on sisal rope because those modern, plastic ropes could melt or turn into Chinese noodles.

woah woah woah there futuristic tree tech defender!! I never said they were inferior. Just asked if they ever fail. Not looking for a dickhead response imho that’s YOU BUB! It’s why they’re called ACCIDENTS but I suppose you’re perfect at this trade and never have come close to one. Thered be no new school without the old but what the fuck is respect anyways? Your response speaks for itself.

Well holy shnikies OMG!?!? Could it be!!!!
IT…..IT IT…..IT’S A ……IT’S A ZIG ZAG FAILURE!!!!! Never had a split tail do that….how bout that plastic stuff? Looks like they do fail guys! 3points for team old school SWOOSH!
Oh and theres another one that didnt go so well. Luckily he was only 8ft up and slowed his fall by dislodging a tooth on a branch. But what do I know? Guess I shoulda asked google first instead of the peanut gallery! If you don’t know now you do. Spread the word. Nothing lasts forever in arboriculture. rope wrench failure here said it once, I’ll say it again SPLIT TAILS DONT DO THAT. Please stop proving the movie IDIOCRACY is our current reality?? But more importantly inspect your shit and climb safe. Trust NOTHING!

We are all here to learn, and in some cases to teach. Neither of those activities benefits from mean-ass talk.

If you read the headline you referenced you would have read it was a maintenance issue, not manufacturing defect. No different than if you cut through your rope and kept climbing on it…

Woah bud, you’re coming in wicked hot. Chill out and read a bit, see what’s going on, keep your mind open. We all do things differently and of course do them because we think that’s the best way to do them. I hold my tongue when I see what you’re using to get up a tree because I respect that it’s worked for you for so long and that the kind of climbing you do is different than what I do.

A cut rope is visibly apparent. Watch the youtube zigzag ish. You get what you give with me. And yes I realize it was a maintenance issue. Basically on both examples. What baffles me is he admits he missed it, climbed off it noticed it was slipping, blamed it on something else and went out if his way to inform the community. What further baffles me is I asked a decent question and got a condescending jackass of a response. Do I really want to be a part of a community that’s going to deliver sarcastic idiotic remarks on a decent question? Put yourself in my shoes. Ask a stupid question and you get a stupid answer. My question is 100% legit. Not my faulty old Jeffy boy had a bad week!! So take it out on the dickhead not the dude trying to learn and inform as well. If there’s one thing I learned it’s that Jeffery is a smart ass who expects nothing to fail EVER. So go ahead tell me I’m wrong. I’ll still vouch for a split tail over a mechanical hitch but then again I have aman hands and not sissy mits that need assistance from mechanical hitches. You want nice? Be nice! Very CERY simple concept.

Are you always this confrontational? I kind of understand where you're coming from, but my opinion is that your choice of words and personal attacks have not made good first impressions.

I too get where you are coming from but are you sure your standing on the correct foundation here? The members on this thread are being nice, maybe back up a bit and reread the responses…

As for the link, the older zigzag has a well known and recalled & redesigned issue. That was several versions of the device ago.

As for the video he admits to misuse of the zigzag. While I don't personally agree with Petzl and the Chicane, that is the only approved device for using the zigzag in SRS.

Any device misused can cause damage.

Before mechanicals, it was glazed ropes, glazed hitch cords, mis-tied hitches and burning ropes right to the ground. In the 90's, I watched a climber trying to raise his TIP hit at least four limbs on his trip to the ground. In the early 2000's another one, who only lives a few blocks from me and is confined to a wheelchair, hit the ground less than 30 feet from me when he tried passing limbs with his single lanyard.

You can kill yourself with anything if you're using it incorrectly or doing stupid shit. Prior to the internet, you rarely heard about the little mishaps that happen all the time.

You shouldn't be using that Google machine, @Sandy Gaffs CC... them there newfangled computers cause brain cancer... I saw it on the internet.
