Spiderjack causing thumb problems

RyanCafferky

Been here a while
Late this summer I started having pain in my right thumb that was slowly getting worse. It correlated with a lot of climbing with the Spiderjack because of the braking motion of pushing up with the thumb. I'm curious if other Spiderjack users have had similar problems. I've been off the Spiderjack crack for a few months now and have successfully gone through withdrawal without too many negative symptoms.

Dude I had that problem too. Seemed worse when I climbed on thinner ropes, which require more pressure on the brake.

Climbing on the thicker blue moon make it better, thankfully now there's the rope wrench and I don't have to mess with that.

It is like crack though; hard to stop even though you know it's not good for you.

I haven't used mine in a while but I can definitely see how you could develop issues. That's a lot of pressure to be putting on such a small area.

I guess just keeping a gear rotation going is the safest bet to prevent fatiguing of specific areas. It's probably a good way to help keep work climbing interesting too.

Ive actually thought about the thumb issues while deccending on the spiderjack.Thats one of the negative features of the device.I havent really developed any problems yet,but I could see how it could become a real problem.Any repetitive movements that are stresser could turn into real issues over time.I actually use both hands on long decents to eleviate the pressure on my left thumb.Or I install a rope wrench as well just for the long decents to the ground.I also did like Bryan and adjusted the wooded brake so I wouldnt have to push as hard.I got big hands but kinda short thumbs so I gotta take care of them lol.I may try a larger rope like vortex and see how that works, but for now will alternate thumbs, use both hands, rope wrench and maybe try to incorporate other ways to use the brake.Hope it gets better bro.
