some video of my tree work

Re: some video of my tree work

Jerry;
What say ye about severing the hinge wood prior to having the top tip too much?
That's what I'm really leaning towards in conjunction with the humboldt.
If the hinge is cut through will the top not slide off the spar?
Most of my tops are as you mentioned loaded with branches or get rigged but once in awhile I'll get a good size top to drop but I want to lose the bounce or the uncontrolled end landing.
The key as I see it is to get the top to slide off the spar and the only way I see that happening is sever the hinge and possibly assist with a rope as illustrated.
If the hinge is left intact then the top will tip over too much that's for sure.

Say, thanks for Coast Views! Much appreciated!

Re: some video of my tree work

It's a fine point you speak of, Kevin.

Some examples: given enough time to fall, a top, especially a symmetrical one, will orientate itself to lead with its butt, like a limb when dropped from a high perch. In which case either limb or top can stick into the ground. That can cause damage to lawns, sidewalks, driveways, and even underground services. Most certainly in those scenarios one would prefer for the top to land on its side, or on its limbs. A cushy landing.

I've been there a few times, that if I let the top leave the cut too soon it's going to lead butt first. A little wider opening in the face can slow it down enough to keep that from happening.

And to, there's opening the cut too much and having the butt flip completely over and lead once again.

One has to weigh the limb distribution/aerodynamics of the top, the length of it, and the distance it has to fall. Plus outside the tree. Is the top going to brush through the limbs of neighboring trees?. Each situation is unique. Modifying limb distribution in a top so as to make it asymmetrical can alter the outcome significantly.

So there's lots of possibilities. I've cut thousands of tops and watched them fall and land. And by manipulating the factors mentioned above can give some control, but first it takes experience and imagination to be able to see it.

Guess how this top landed, lol!

Re: some video of my tree work

One thing about it, you can fit them in a tighter spot that way.

As with tops and spars that lean. In tight quarters I'll use the slice cut to get the butt to slip off the cut and get the butt to lead from the very start. Slice cut!

Ever run out of gas in the middle of one of these cuts?

Re: some video of my tree work

If I want to fall a larger top (too big to comfortably 'slice' or 'fast' cut) I'll put in a narrow, steeply angled face cut and then match the angle with my back cut (often cutting most of the hinge as the face closes) so that the top tips off vertical enough to clear me before falling butt down.

Re: some video of my tree work

Yeah, I follow you there, Gord. Boy, but let me tell you, if the top is held up by a branch from another tree, and the butt will slip off the cut,,,the works will crash down on you. I know from past experience, long ago.

I'm sure you understand what I'm saying, but there's a lot of viewers who would look at that illustration and think, "Cool!" and not know the ramifications.

This thread has really gone on the track from the original post. Is there any way of saving it? I think this would be a good thread to continue.

Re: some video of my tree work

I understand what you're doing there Gord but I'd be worried about the face closing without breaking the hinge and the wood splitting out.

Re: some video of my tree work

the only time i've use that cut is when im hanging a leaning tree in the tree its leaning in. it will slide off the stump and after a few cuts hang on the rope and u can manage it however u like but in a tree???

That's a good point Jerry, it's definitely not something I would suggest a novice climber attempt.

In the aftermath of such a catastrophe, your film was quite something Mark....I gave you 5 stars for that one

Re: some video of my tree work

Definite 5 star.

Most of the trees in the vid that were hollow were so before the fire entered into them and further weakened them. Typical of the damage done during fires in our old growth redwood stands.

What strikes me odd, and I've always wondered, is of all the Euc groves I've worked in and individual trees I've worked with in California, I have never seen any heart rot or hollow in a single tree.

Granted the oldest are only 150, or so years old. But because the trees were introduce here as seed could it be that the fungus which hollowed the trees in the video is absent here?

Any ideas or opinions, or hypothesis's about that?

Re: some video of my tree work

Wasnt the biggest tree ever recorded a Euc that was felled due to a fire in Tasmania? I seem to remember seeing a black and white photo of it on here.
