Some Rainy Day Projects

Thanks Chris. I'm learning from Chip, who knows his stuff on splicing just about anything but when I'm back in cowtown I'll be on my own. I will check out that reference.

Everything I spliced was from new but that image of the prussik doesn't look like it for sure. That's the wrong picture now I think about it. It looks just the same only red.

Kinda neat climbing on stuff you've spliced yourself, right? I'm no expert, but they look solid to me.

Regarding that prusik, please forgive me as I am no expert (I'm trying to learn from forum posts and expensive rope breaking), buy did you bury the standard amount of rope per splice? If so, what knot(s) are you using with it and what kind of performance are you seeing from your work?

I spliced a few ice tail prusiks (nowhere near the same fiber, but somewhat similar construction) that are more narrow in the middle than they are near the splice and I don't like the performance they are yielding unless I use them in a standard prusik. I've been carrying the bury all the way past the middle and tapering so that I have a consistent size all the way through.

Sorry if this post exposes my newness to splicing.....like I pointed out, I'm trying to learn.

Valid question for sure! I basically followed the Samson guidelines and the burys meet exactly in the middle, or at least it feels like an even diameter all the way around.

I have not tried this one yet. But I think I will today.

Nora, when you say they meet in the middle, is this implying a crossover of the tapers, or do the points of the tapers land at the same spot? I hear what JTree is saying and I like the crossover, too. Otherwise, the hitch can act a bit funny up at the top coil. I've been using Ice fairly regularly as they seem to be much more durable and reliable than Tenex, and just as easy to splice.

BTW, really nice needle work.

This may be off topic, but has anyone ever tried their own stitched eye? I'm curious to make one and have it tested. My neighbor is a textile grad student with sewing machines that would blow your mind.
