So I made my own splicing wand.

I couldn't bring myself to buy one at the price, so I figured since I have a lathe and generally know what I'm doing with metal I'd make one. The keeper setup to hold the tube in place seemed a bit chintzy to me, so I replaced it with a setup similar to what you see in a pin vise. While it works nicely, I'm wondering if there are any other improvements to be made.
Any thoughts?

Really nice, now you need to make a long one so you can splice 16-strand. And evo is right about the tip. The Toss wands have a rounded ball tip that keeps them from snagging on the rope strands.
 
Doing a ball tip, and making the wand longer are both ludicrously easy tasks. What sort of OD do you think would be good for the wand itself? I'm hesitant to go below 1/8 in for the rod holding the splicing loop as it gets a bit more touchy to machine that small accurately.

Sweet! I only used a toss wand once way back. Worked great for 16strand but made a wire fid and use that exclusively.
If you were to make a second how much in postage would it cost to ship it to the wet coast?
 
Oh pretty cool man! I just responded to your original thread.. but looks like you got the idea of what the wire fid is. Not bad.. not bad at all.. Much prettier than what i use...haha

If anyone wants one I should be able to nail out a couple more. Problem is since I got one prototype done I'm not 100% sure where a good price on em would be. I think that if I ask $70 plus shipping it should cover enough of my time and materials I won't object to making them much.

I thin that would offer too much temptation to put a LOT of force on it. If that is something you really want, despite my warning, I'll be happy to do so.

Yes, you do not want to pull too hard on the snare or it will break. I went thru several snares on my Toss Wand before I finally realized that it was not made for hard pulling. That is what wire fids are for. But the ring would be nice for hanging it on the wall.
 
Anyone else use the SELMA nesting Stainless Steel fids? They go up to 13mm, then they stop. I was thinking to make some additional Nesting fids to go up to 7/8". I have the full aluminum versions, they work great. But I keep a set of the nesting fids in the truck and end up using them more because of the compact size and availability vs the larger ones at the house.\\

Anyone done this?

Not me. But I see no reason why you could not do it. You must be splicing some really big stuff?
