So I made my own splicing wand.

Not me. But I see no reason why you could not do it. You must be splicing some really big stuff?
3/4"and 5/8" frequently. I use loose different things when splicing, but still having the nesting fids is a life saver. I've lost fids when they were loose in the truck. People have used them as pry bars and bent them. Nice to know everything is in one place when you need it.

So has anyone ever seen this: D splicer soft fid s8 (or made something like it) - it's seems a brilliant idea - found it on a couple of websites in the EU for about 17-19 Euro's but then they wanted - GASP - 40-45 Euros for shipping by DHL (didn't want to just mail it)!

This seems a brilliant idea - saw it on "Poplar Mechanics" YouTube channel:

Really inventive guy.

I guess the soft fid is an ok way to do it, but it looks like a lot of unnecessary hassle to me. I have spliced a ton of Tachyon, including used rope using nothing but a wire fid, and it is not that difficult if you just reduce the volume of the core before trying to pull it through the cover. What I mean by reducing the volume of the core is removing about half the strands about 5" from the end of the core. Then, to pull it through the cover you insert about 2" into the wire fid. That way the core will fold back on itself so that it is about equal to the original diameter, and it will pull through with relatively little effort. It still takes a bit of tugging and massaging, but no more than what is shown in the soft fid video.

Arlo thanks - I haven't had any luck playing twice now with a splice on a chunk of 11 mm CE lanyard that's a shadow of it's former length, after a couple of summer's use. I just can't seem to get the core out of the cover even, it's in there so tight. Any tricks for that? It'd be nice to have a spliced eye in this (it's usually sewn eyes but the one splice outfit I asked won't sew used line) - so far I'm stuck with a knot.

I have only done 3 splices in used Tachyon, and every time it was a bitch to get the core out of the cover and to get the core back through the cover. And the only way to do the final bury was with a huge amount of massaging and liberal use of the hammer. So, if all you are talking about is a fairly short lanyard, I would not bother trying to splice it. I would just buy a new chunk of rope and splice that. You can usually get good buys on short pieces of rope from suppliers like Wesspur.

Thanks again ARLO - I do have a new 10 m lanyard replacement for this coming season but I keep banging my head against the wall with this old chunk - it's come to a kinda "guy will dominate" thing - guess it keeps me warm in the cold cold Canadian winter up here . . . . .
Cheers

That was my attitude when I tried to splice a brand new piece of Direction Up, which is supposed to be unsplicable. I was feeling pretty cocky and I told the owner of the rope "Just give it to me and I will do an eye splice in it. I can splice a rock!" I still have that splice hanging in my shop with the crossover bulging out of the throat.

Pretty sure tberger says you can't hand splice that Sirius ce lanyard rope. I don't think ive seen or heard of anyone hand splicing it. Talk to jimmycrackcorn, he was just talking about splicing one recently but I think he ended up sewwing it.

Bumping an old thread!! Just started my splicing journey and chose Tachyon as my first splice. It's on the "Hook of Shame" . That being said, I watched popular mechanic video and ordered the soft fid. It may be my inexperience (not knowing any better) but I absolutely love this thing! One tiny wrap of tape at the tip and feed it into the sock and Bammm it's there!
