So.. Free Climbing?

It's still there. We're supposed to go in with more permanent props at some point. I am sure I uploaded a bunch of pictures of the tree when it was all tied together.

I'm glad it left an impression. I am still stoked that I got to work on it...

The angel oak has people clean the spanish moss out of it to keep it from choking out foliage. It also has a bunch of runs of cable.
I want to get on that crew.

Was Billy on it?
Who cares? My good friend Daniel Murphy taught me to always get a damage/injury waiver before starting any job.. If they say I can't be held liable for smashing the swing-set, then that's exactly what I am gonna do. Billy, or no Billy...

Where are all of the badass pruning climbs on youtube? Like crown reductions on huge euro beech on some English manor, or delicate cypress shaping.. It's all removals that pop up for tree work and the "big names" do mostly takedowns.
I have been thinking this for awhile now with all this discussion on videos that are all removals. I agree, doing end weight reduction on a large cottonwood over a house where you have to rope out a bunch of tips back to laterals and making it even and effective takes skill and knowledge. PS not out of a bucket.

Yeah, kinda a boring video when you see the a branch that looks like a twig (compared to the whole tree) being gently/uneventfully lowered down, then waiting 5-10 minutes for the climber to move to the next limb over and do the same thing again.

Sure, it's boring to someone that wants to see tree smashing. The thing about difficult climbing is it's difficult to film well, too. You need multiple camera angles in addition to helmet POV. Then lots of editing to cut out the parts where you're pulling rope tail AGAIN. My coworker has a good quote: "any dickhead with a saw can cut a tree down."
I'd much rather watch a prune in a cool tree than another crane pick.

I'm talking about drama. Like you said, it takes a lot of effort to make a good video. A good prune shouldn't have a whole lot of excitement for a camera. Not that they aren't exciting to the climber...they absolutely are - but you can't generate that feeling on film. Very small audience will watch them meaning it doesn't make a lot of sense investing in making them for youtube.

On the other hand: Hitting your helper with a tip-tied piece while he is removing the tree next to you, dropping 30" diameter chunks on the neighbor's RV, picking an entire trunk over a house...that will get a wider audience outside of nerds like us who just want to watch trees. There is some drama there.

While I agree with your coworker's statement we all know that there is a big gap between that dickhead with a saw and someone who can do it without leaving so much as a dent in the muddy yard. I'm not going to say pruning is harder than removals...I've done relatively few removals and know that there is a lot I don't know about doing those as well as I could - so I have respect for those who do a great job. Not that you don't...I just want to verbalize my support for them!

With good editing n before n after shots, an outstanding pruning vid's totally doable.

Haven't seen one yet, but Reg has come very close.

Even vulture's have their place in the world.

Today's tech makes it easier to accomplish.

That Archangel Tree Archive project's pretty fuggin cool too.

I'm thinking about sponsoring a Nude Conifer Pruning event for a worthwhile charity... like the Save Daniel Murphy From Himself Fund or the Dollars for Dickheads Foundation (which helps to buy thongs and designer ear muffs for Cunuckifornian loggers like @rico).

I've got some spruce trees picked out.

If you never got your thong jammed up with spruce twigs you’re not a real a climber! Or some such BS like that ;-)

I'm in...Getting my prick pricked by some spruce needles sounds super fun...
