snow plow or Ice storm??

The last couple weeks around hear (Cincinnati OH area) has got me thinking. I don't try and sell snow plowing mainly because I don't want to be tied down here if a nice ice storm hits farther south and the wear and tear on the truck(s). I was talking to a landscaper and found out he subs just plowing at $75 an hour. The wheels started turning and I'm now wondering if my decision on snow plowing should be looked at again. So for the guys that live in areas that don't get historically a couple feet of snow each winter what made you make the call as far as offering snow plowing or not?

We help shovel, and operate a skid steer for a buddy of ours who has a few snow removal contracts. Don't know his rate, but from what I hear, around our area (Lexington, KY) you can make $3,000 maybe if you have a plow truck, and some contracts. There is a ton of money to be made in snow removal, it's just getting the start up cash that can be hard, and finding contracts. $4500 for a plow I think, another $800 or so for the salt spreader.

I really enjoy snow plowing for a couple reasons.
1. It gives my body a break while still making money.
2. I make a lot more money per hour plowing snow then I do climbing trees.
3. I drive all around my area in a truck with my name and phone number on it and often times get tree work from it.
4. Now I like snow / winter a lot more then before.

So if I had it to do again, I would by the plow, truck and salter all over again.

I'll take tree work any day over snow plowing. We just had a wet heavy snow and it wrecked alot of trees. It snowed last Wednesday and we are still doing storm work. I would think you would make more on days of tree work to one day of snow removal. I turned down 150$ hour to push snow with my track loader with a snow box. To much risk if you ask me. If I slide and hit a parked car, I just gave away all those hours of pushing snow.

Thanks for that input. It helps me rethink plowing snow.

And welcome to the Buzz! Don't be a stranger. And feel free to bring anything you can to the table.

Snow removal can be a good source of income for smaller businesses that are slow during the winter season. Many times, our snow storms do no damage to trees, but its enough snow to create problems during clean up when doing tree work, so we take a day or two off to let the snow melt and clear up. These one or two off days are the days that are great for doing snow removal.

I was looking into buying a new truck and plow during this last storm. Ford has some really good deals for F-250 with plows. You can almost get the plow for free. But you never know about next year. we might not get another winter like this for some time.

I had the joy of plowing a corn field this morning.
