Snap cuts

Mark, we use double cloves and cow hitches for tie offs. If you TDS the hitch, it is not coming untied.
It is very slippery and requires a 3 fid length bury (for the eye splice).
We don't have our own crane, so we rent. We don't like placing the eyes on the crane hook, just in case there are burrs. We set a 17 or 25 ton screw pin shackle, depending on which diameter the rope is, on the hook and lock the gate closed. The pin of the shackle rides on the hook and the spider legs go on the 'bow'. I put polyester sleeves in the eyes to help protect them from wear. If you want, I can get a pic of the protected eyes.
See attachment for shackle on hook.

Thanks. Not neccessary for a pic of the sleaves. I understand that. What lengths do you generally use?

Thanks. The last job I posted he used Stablebraid but had one unspliced length girth hitched to a shackle. I wasnt crazy about that.

I'm not sure I understand your setup. Why didn't you like it?

Hey Norm i like the shackle/ clevis set up! Not only to protect from burrs but to hold those eyes where otherwise they could slip out of the hook when spread out. Good idea! I've been using a buntline hitch lately to tie off spider legs and it's been working well. (again remember TDS!)

The rope is always at the same spot and not removed from the shackle. I agree it should be close to the same as a slpice but I feel it should be removed and retied to allow for inspection. Maybe I am wrong on this let me know what you think.

This is a pic of it. I dont know how clear it is? The rope is also on the pin and not the bow of the shackle.

I took down alot of trees this week . Mostly crane cuts.
I like the cow hitch on the spider leg more than other knots.
With my Amsteel slings and Tenex slings , I'm at the pinnacle of my crane / tree years . I can't tell you how many crane jobs I've done in my day but I'm having more fun controling these limbs and logs. Snap cuts depend on the tree , the guy cutting and the person on the crane.Spider Legs - Place the tip of the boom in the right place , Spider down a few legs . Tighten up just a little bit , make the eye contact , hit it . Got to love it . Snap cuts have their place . Spider legs eliminate the need for snap cuts for limbs .
