Ski to Die, Die to Ski

I met a pro ski shooter at Mt Baker a while back. It was overcast and manky powder, but he snapped this cool pan blur of yours truly....

steveogle.com has samples of his excellent work.

Unbelievable. Busiest day ever for Silverton Mountain. It had to be 60 degrees by the afternoon turning the snow into mashed potatoes. There was some Sick lines getting skied across the basin by Helitrax out of Telluride. Lots of Sunburned happy people at the end of the day. I got a little bit of video that I need to figure out how to get it loaded on here.

4'??!!! Holy moleee!! I've been wanting to hit that place up for ages..and moreso now that they've finally gone unguided.

Host your video on Youtube or other...google video...etc.

Do you visit the tgr forum? I'am headed over there to see if there's any trip reports up yet!

I've been too danged busy to ski lately, and that SUCKS donkey balls.

I was at Telluride back in '98 or so for a ski media conference...it's a nice hill, but the OB is sick...and the scenery as well!

I posted this at the TH a week ago....

10 days ago, the slopes were bare.....then it snowed...and snowed....super light fluff, rare for the PNW....

and the next storm is rolling in this afternoon..but will bring big winds with it.

I skiied Stevens Pass Thursday, which was super deep (4 feet of 4-5% moisture content snow) but with little terrain open, and nothing steep, there was little fun to be had.

Yesterday, at Crystal Mt, by contrast, was EPIC.....2.5-3.5 feet of blower even lighter powder, and few people, so I was able to ski slightly cut up or untracked knee to hip deep fluff everywhere I went.. No action pics, no one wanted to stop, and it was danged cold, 0-10 degrees.

High Campbell lift, which serves up nothing but double diamond expert terrain

Avalanche Basin, part of the South Back Country, which requires ridge hiking and climbing for 10-30 minutes to access incredible goods.

I would have stayed up and skied today, but I'm bushed...two bad knees, and a sore butt from taking out a rock with it  .....and the big windstorm is coming.

Those pictures make me drool on my keyboard.
I have never had the honor of skiing powder like that.
Looks like so much fun.
My daughter and I got free lift tickets at the Warren Miller film last week. Flagstaff is getting hammered pretty good. I CANT WAIT!

Going to venture out into the back country for the first time today. Going to keep it mellow-there is still quite a bit of instanility in the snowpack.
Tree work is out- way too much snow! I guess that's what home equity is for right?

Met up with John and Lisa from Silverton today for a little tour. John is a guide at Silverton Mountain and rows boats on the Grand all summer. Lisa is a BLM ranger and artist and ultra runner.

Digging a pit to check the snow pack. It scored a perfect ten which is means high avalanch danger on that paticular aspect.

1" fresh today. I skied until noon got bored and called it quits.

I wish the runs here were longer, steeper and coverded in a blanket of soft snow instead of ice.

Maybe another 1/2" tonite! I'll get my snorkel ready.

I need to get out west

Nice! I just found your trip report.....looks like it warmed a bunch after the big snows ended around XMAS, eh?

Great scenery! and not just the hills!! Jealous......uhhhhh

Raining .3 an hour right now, up to 6000 feet.....there's goes our pow....maybe the Rocky Mt depth hoar layer and other submerged slippyslidies will get saturated....and stabilize...or the whole pack will go.

I heard Stevens Pass was evacuating workers off the hill today.....(the road's been closed all day---all lanes were blocked by one or more slides.....)
