the spider leg has to be smaller diameter than rope to grab like a climbing prussic

Not true.. its good, but not absolutely necessary.. You can add extra wraps with a thicker line if needed.. any old climbing line should work just fine!

When rigging, try to find the oldest, most retired climbing line you can, and use that until it breaks. Then, use the smaller pieces to make yourself a belt.

I was in an EHAP workshop yesturday and saw this picture. I instantly thought of this thread. This picture is in the EHAP TCIA manuel.

The picture was takin from my phone, and my phone is a fossil.

It looks like it would work, but not very practical......but hell, Minimal gear needed

i tie my primary lowering line to the end that i don't want directionally pulled, find the best central balance point tie a rigging pruisik, use a second lowering line to run from pruisik to tie on limb in the direction of pull, which is done w/the tail of the secondary lowering rope. i've used this technique on multiple occasions, it gets a little more tricky when the limb is at an upward angle and the tip needs to be lowered to a more level position to prevent kicking into you.
