Silver Maple Root Situation

Hi,

There is a large Silver Maple adjacent to a sand playground. Client wants to replace sand with a wood fiber safety surface which consists of 150mm (6") crushed stone then 350mm (12")wood chips.
It is assumed that 50% of root system could be within the sand area.
Root excavation and fill around roots with the stone and wood fiber covering - should topsoil be added to the areas directly around the roots, then stone and fiber?

Thanks!

I would think top soil around the roots would be key. Sounds like between the stone and wood chips there would be a lot of air space in the root zone.

Maybe if they are willing to invest a little more an application of a root growth regulator before the installation?

I would also be concerned about a soil interface issue being created/exasperated and root loss during the process.

2nd the consultant bit.

A consultant for sure can advise you on HPB high performance base gravels that are often used instead of the normal soil and gravel for areas like new driveways, patios, etc with a mptz. Also check local bylaws on allowance permit to injure allow, etc.

Where about are you? If you don't mind me asking

This is the Toronto area, and yes following the procedures for permits/injuries to trees, tree preservation plan, etc. I will look into HPB.
What is mptz?

It really sounds like you need a consultant to do this work. This is not something taught when you become an ISA CA or at college.

As a consultant, I'd like to make one thing clear: consultants are overrated!

But you do need more info to care for this tree. Like, why is soil excavation being proposed? Post pics if you want informed advice. If you don't want help here, yes look up someone local, like the 2nd author on the attached in Toronto. He has an understanding of structural soil.
The description on page 21 was true; that stuff was hard. I hope they've changed their recipe! The story itself was strange to read now--butterfly larvae as control agents? Flip City!
