silky versus corona handsaws

The Silky hook on a Longboy.

I'll have to get one of those, it looks like just what I need. You have a model # by any chance?
The buttons on my Longboy and Guy's Hayauchi were sticky from the start... definitely annoying.

FamilyTree,
Did the button actually break or just pop out of the hole?

On another note, I just picked up a Silky Pro Sentei for finer pruning work. The scabbard fits nicely when taped to my Sugoi Scabbard. That is a sweet little saw! The fine teeth are perfect for cleaning out storm damaged heads and making subduction cuts... still has enough balls in the coarse teeth so you don't have to switch saws just to take a 1-1/2" piece here and there.

As it happens, I'm all yellow, Sugoi, Longboy and Pro Sentei... too bad I don't know how to color coordinate anything else.

I'm not sure why someone couldn't use a Silky in either hand. Mine's similar on both sides of the handle.

I wouldn't be surprise if Brookings, Oregon, sees and increase in internet sales for the Zubat after the garden club members saw me use it pruning their botanical garden trees for them.

They did the clean-up and I taught them about pruning. Several members took a keen interest in the handsaw.

The handle does have an excellent grip in wet weather.

The tab at the end can be a nuisance, but can be removed in about 1 minute with slow quick grinds and water bath to cool the metal every few seconds.

Few tools in the world are above fine tuning. A lesson I learned from the country clubs.

I see talk about the pole saws. The Silky ones are really poor design. Clips don't hold and detent buttons don't stay in place. I've heard the newer, more expensive pole is a better design, but its a pound heavier than the Hayuauchi. I now own a Stihl branded ARS 20 footer...better tool for sure. The Zubat pole saw is nice, but the clips are the same poor design.

Re Corona handsaws, note my post from some time back. The new ones no longer are the same, handle is different, and prolly blade quality as well. Samurai makes the identical saw as the old Corona....and for extra $, the thinner, hollow ground Ichiban is a great blade...but I've broken two of them. Have to cut with finesse with them and then they'll work fine...prolly faster cutting than a Zubat and last a long time...till they break. I'm going to buy more Zubat blades for that reason.

Roger, I hear you on the Silky Polesaw hardware. I wish they would redesign that part... but I like oval shaft and folding blade on the Longboy. It's not nearly as long but it's much lighter than the ARS poles. The folding blade makes it easy to use with leash too. I don't care for the finishing on the Longboy... or the Hayauchi.

Truth is, I hate polesaws and love them at the same time... nothing screws with my climbing more than my polesaw, but when I'm tippy-toeing out on a long oak limb and my TIP is behind me at some ridiculous angle, it's nice to do the last 15' with a sawpole.

I just ordered the hook fox for my Longboy... I wish Silky would just design a solid, no compromise polesaw strictly for climbing; here's my wish list:
<ul type="square">
[*]15' long in 3 sections
[*]no heavier than the current Longboy
[*]single action twist locks (half turn) that can be operated with gloved hands
[*]Hook suitable for pushing rope, pulling hangers and clipping to a leash
[*]Folding blade with no protruding hardware to snag on stuff; the blade should stay folded and not be able to snag rope
[*]Clip on the butt suitable for a leash.
[*]Oval crossection (like Longboy) with cleanly finished edges
[*]Straight and curved replacement blades
[*]Red
[*]Super Bonus Feature - Head angle adjustable for about a 10 degree offset to either side.
[/list]

For a durable, nicley finished saw with those features I would pay (grudgingly) in the neighborhood of $250 to $300 assuming the blades would be in the $30 - $40 category... that's how much I use a polesaw. The 200T stays on the ground till I need it but the Longboy goes up with me every time unless I'm taking down.
