Save it or on the way out?

Location

Recently saw some woodpeckers hanging around the base of one of our trees - all the time. After investigating it looks like carpenter ants have really make a nice condo development in the base. The one side looks bad but the back looks much better. Any chance I can dust/spray for the carpenter ants and save the tree or should it go now? Nice, tall, and green - but it does lean the way of the house. Much appreciated!

Yeah...better pictures of the root flares/butt.

What caused that damage?

Stick a probe in - how deep into the trunk does the rot go?

Thanks for the replies. Looks definitely to be 2 different trees (to me). I would say ~40% of the area seems to be affected as you can see from the backside ok. Sticking a -stick- in the holes it doesn't seem to go to far but there is a lot of white goo seeping out and large carpenter ants all around with the bark relatively easily flaking off. here are some more pics:IMG_8607.jpgIMG_8606.jpgIMG_8604.jpg

Time for a consultation with a preservation-skilled arborist for a health/ hazard eval.

You will (should) gain lots more info that applies (edit) not only to this mystery tree ( species unknown... If it were an animal, is it a lion or a crocodile... Both have tails, 4 legs, two eyes, etc).
