Sand up guard

I am looking to purchase a stand up screen/guard to use with my stump grinder. Since its going to take a pretty good beating I'm just wondering if anyone has any they would recommend or stay away from. Thanks!

Hinged plywood blows over easily and requires relatively flat ground, otherwise it wants to fold up and fall over. That beach screen looks interesting but admittedly is a bit too colorful.

Lots of good ideas here. We do have mats. I was leaning more toward one of the guards like the Sherrill style, but I'm concerned about it holding up getting tossed in an out of trucks, covered in chips etc. I think Ill look into fabbing up a few holders for the mats as usually they are already on the job anyway.

You could use some really thin plywood, with tube straps and electrical conduit to hold things into place. All of which are pretty cheap.

The guards from Sherrill are junk. The hinges come apart too easy, so you end up losing them. The "rivets" securing the mesh rip out and it all just falls apart. If you are planning on folding them nicely and storing them on their own in a protected spot they'd be fine, otherwise they just don't stand up to abuse whatsoever.

I think you are talking about the old ones. The new ones don't have rivets and they are not the clips anymore. I think they re-made it. It looks pretty cool when I saw one at TCIA.

Re: Stand up guard

I have pics of some home made panels that are cheap and pretty durable.

The frame is 1" EMT/electrical conduit.
Screen is wind screen panels from a tennis court. The edges were hemmed and had grommets. The screen is attached using zip ties. Notice that the lower frame is about 6" off the ground and the screen drapes down 7" or so to seal the bottom edge.
The legs are made from 3/4" EMT. The horizontal part is kinked to make a two-point leg with about 2" clearance in the middle. The T-leg slips inside the end of the frame. The frame would sometimes blow over so we kept sandbags or small tires to ballast the T-legs.

To weld the frame the galvanizing needs to be ground off. The ends of the horizontals were flattened in a vise so I could weld a flat to a round. Welding two rounds is a challenge.

I'm sure that shade cloth from a nursery would work the same. Or, get hold of a company that maintains tennis courts and get their off-casts.
