Safety Specs

Location
UK
During a recent recreational climbing excursion, I had a branch spring back into my face scratching my right eye, doing some permanent damage. As I was not working I did not take the precaution of a visor or safety glasses.

When working I use specs in preference to a visor due to their less cumbersome nature. However I am yet to find a pair which work best for me.

Buzz users, I would very much appreciate your input and advice as to what is available and what people use.

At the end of september I was at the arb show and spoke to Chris Cowell about the Safety specs he was using, they looked really good - 3 interchangeable lenses, elastic for use with ear muffs and a case in which to store it all.

Having followed the buzz for a while it's good to finally post something on here - sorry it's so long!!

Its not the climb
That takes the time
Its getting the line in!!

(rhyme in response hours of failed throwline attempts)

There are many good safety specs on the market, wraparound are best, sun or clear lenses. Although they are pretty useless in the rain - thats when I switch to mesh visor.
If you cant get the safety glasses with the elastic - you could use ear plugs if the ear defenders are a problem, although again, earplugs are bad in the rain
Dry weather - petzl hardhat with chin strap, wraparound safety specs with elastic and foam earplugs.
Wet weather - petzl hardhat with chin strap, flip down mesh visor and ear defenders.
sorry couldnt help with brand names

The ones I like are made by Wilson. 'Prevail', they come clear, grey tint, or mirror tint. Most of the ones I've ordered for company use come with an adjustable retainer strap so when I'm not using them, they hang around my neck nice and handy like. They are inexpensive, look good and are comfortable enough that I use them all the time as sunglasses. Never a time I'm without

Sorry to h'ear about that.

i like Bug Eyes and always wear them for climbing; just becasue of close calls like mentioned here. i have found that in climbing down'ere; even the 'dust' falling off bark or from the rich moss fauna in trees; can be an eye irritant.

I wear Bug Eyez too. I sweat too much to tolerate any lenses. I've tried lots of different styles and none seem to work. Bug Eyez let some stuff through but at least I don't get mad and toss them.

Thanks for your suggestions chaps, any ideas where I might be able to hold of some 'Bug Eyez'?

Bearing in mind I live in the UK, a retailer this side of the atlantic would be good, but if sherrill do them I have an account there.

I wear Superbs from the time I get outta the bed till the time I get back in. Most days I forget they are ontop of my head and have to take them off when trying to shampoo my hair. They fit my plus sized head well.

My point with the pics is find something you like an wear it all the time. I like mine and wear them all the time. These next 2 pictures are of a wreck I was in a couple months back, my head hit the windshield/rearview mirror. I was wearing my superbs at the time (but not my seatbelt) and they kept me from getting glass in my eyes, picked out spalled glass and bits of plastic out of my scalp for weeks.

Safety glasses are somewhat like body armor, the best kind to have is the kind your wearing when the time comes.

Face masks for me aren't practical, I don't like them and wouldn't wear them regularly. I found the glasses I like and buy them by the box, these cost $8USD and have saved my eyes many thousands of dollars of damage. I have worn contacts most my life, my left eye was nearly blinded when I was younger, I enjoy my vision!

I also like the tinted lens, reduces my eye strain dramatically, makes hotter days seem cooler, and reduces mental fatigue. Three years ago I didnt wear shades in my day to day life, now I do my best to not go a day without them!

I use Stihl and Superbs as well.

But being we are on the subject I would like to know something. I have noticed when removing my contact lenses at night that there is oil, bar and chain I would assume, on them. I first noticed it when I put the contacts in the case and notices a little rainbow in the solution. First, has anyone else noticed this? Secondly, is this something that should concern me as per the health of mine and others eyes? I also wear my safety glasses almost all day long.

I also wear contacts, and when i used standard contact solution, i too had that rainbow effect, and i found my contacts to wear out faster, i switched up to the clear kind, ad i found less of the oily stuff afterwards, and my eyes felt better longer

My contacts stay in for weeks/months at a time. The oil film isn't from the bar oil, been there since before I used chainsaws. A little over 11 years of contact wearing here, same brand/model the whole time.

No worries! :)
