Rural legends

The town I grew up in was very tied in to military and federal government, albeit discreetly, during the cold war. There was a missile base 10 or 20 miles out of town, with tunnles leading back in to downtown.
This is where things get hazy.
There is a FEMA head quarters in town that occupies a small portion of the bunker under town. A small 2 story office building is all you see, tho it extends 2 to 5 stories underground. The fallout bunker extends through almost all of down town, with entrances at the court house and what is now a city park. The ventilation shafts have all been caped off and "hidden" from sight, most are now buildings with no doors. The published records for the bunker state it was 300 achors, that is a huge underground space, especially thinking they built it under the public's nozes.
The legend arises as some of us have attempted to find a way in to the bunker. We all joke that the local homeless population have a camp down there, I mean where do they all go at night.
The bunker is real, I know that, much else is all guess work and closed government docs.

@Drumbo...how about Punderson Manor House being haunted? Hear about that as a kid?

I worked there in highschool as a server and emergency bartender. The old part of the Mansion is definitely spooky but I never saw anything weird. Of course, I was far more focused on the waitresses...

I can tell you that the housekeeping staff refused to go up to the third floor and the gals wouldn't talk about. "Evil place" is all one of them would say and leave it at that.

I have never heard that one but my wife grew up a few miles away from there and she never heard about it either.
Maybe it died with your generation...?

Yuk yuk. I think stories about it are in Haunted Ohio books or something similiar. Something about a murder/suicide but it may all be BS.

She grew up in Newbury or Burton?

Anyway, you guys should check that place out for Sunday brunch or dinner sometime. Beautiful views of the lake and trees from the dining rooms too.
