Running a legal business

Hi all,I’ve been logging on here for a few years and have gotten a lot of great stuff from here! This is the first time I have ever posted anything.I am from New Jersey and since 2017 if an individual or company is seen providing tree service without a state registration and licensed opperator or licensed tree expert they recieve a warning or fines. It’s for real here!I was very sceptical when this legislation was first passed but it has been the best thing for our industry here! There is a lot to it but in short if you don’t have expirience, proper insurance(it must be specific code which denotes tree trimming and removal for both WC and lianility) you can not obtain license. Many companies around here have already gone out of business.I’t has leveled the playing field for legit tree companies trying to do good work with good safe work practices!

I don’t like seeing anyone go out of business but i also think you should be required to have some level of training before you take someones money for trimming their trees or doing hazardous work around people and property!

I would take something of a nuanced view on regulations.

In a lot of areas high school kids and those who are just starting out did yard work, and ventured into some tree work to make money. I don't believe that those trying to build small businesses should be penalized unduly; government workers usually have a lot of latitude to issue warnings before the fines become onerous.

I was brutally intimidated by the state without reasonable help to get into compliance, with warning letters of fines of $1200-$2500 for doing tree work without a license when no customer complained and I had a climber come over from a top flight tree business in Greenwich to do pruning and take downs. He was class of 1965 at the same high school I went to and was righteous in his work, no swearing, respectful of all; quite a departure from some of the foul mouthed landscapers and tree workers I worked with. Maybe I have a low tolerance for profanity and immoral activity with a brother who ended up in prison after 15 or so years of bad and criminal activity.

There needs to be reasonable paths to legality, I don't believe anyone especially good willing workers should be shut down without work. I've been there with very little income opportunities, nothing much to do. I have seen people who see little in the way of work opportunities claim ss disability. That is not something anyone should be forced into.

There are many homeowners who look for cut rate work on their property indifferent to legality. The state of CT will go on properties to check on licensing without a warrant. I have helped one of George Patton's relatives do work in his backyard with the town environmental regulation people stopping work as there was some wetland section. Sometimes the regulations are ridiculous.
