RopeTek Sidewinder - Retractable Lanyard System

Re: RopeTek Sidewinder - Retractable Lanyard Syste

For the record I think its a great idea and have been using a similiar system for a while

A few guys on Arbtalk have dabbled with this concept but not got it to work well in a compact format, therefore nothing has come to fruition.

This looks fantastic and i'm gonna be first in line for one.

On the other hand Paul, if you need anyone to do some R&D, just pm

Re: RopeTek Sidewinder - Retractable Lanyard Syste

I've had one similar on my tree mo for about a year and it has been great. I've built four of them, Jimmy and his climber both like. It's a great idea, this one looks to be built well. Congrats to all involved for getting something of this nature to the masses.

Questions:
Is it comp ready?
Can it mount to any harness?
Will it come in diff sizes for diff lengths of rope?
When will it be on the market?

Re: RopeTek Sidewinder - Retractable Lanyard Syste

Yeah Brian yours works great mang, glad someone gonna bring the idea to the market.

Since its not used for life support there shouldn't be a comp issue...or should there, maybe I'm missing something.

Re: RopeTek Sidewinder - Retractable Lanyard Syste

Nick...the retractor isn't part of life support. It takes the place of a daisy chain for long lanyards.

It's downstream from the friction device/hitch...or am I missing something?

Re: RopeTek Sidewinder - Retractable Lanyard Syste

He's talking about the excess rope after the termination. That is retracted back in the sidewinder

Re: RopeTek Sidewinder - Retractable Lanyard Syste

Yes, Tom, the retractor is completely downstream from the adjustor/hitch/cam.

Do comp rules/regs require a specific type of stopper knot at the end of the cord? Sidewinders dont have a fishermans or scaffold knot persay but the end of the cord is doubled over and stitched like an eyesplice without the eye. You cannot remove the cord from the device without taking the winder apart so a judge would have to take the user at Ropeteks word that the stopper was installed, or dismantle, inspect and re-assemble the device.

Without taking the Sidewinder apart you would have to break the device to get the cord to come out.

Verdict?

Re: RopeTek Sidewinder - Retractable Lanyard Syste

I think a stiched end would pass if its stiched properly, just so the friction hitch or device has something to stop the rope from pulling thru .

Re: RopeTek Sidewinder - Retractable Lanyard Syste

Spliced/stitched eye was what I was hoping you would say, that's what ended up in mine before MW comp. That end termination is crucial in passing inspection, I had pics of the inside of mine. Any word on the other questions?

Re: RopeTek Sidewinder - Retractable Lanyard Syste

In the last version of the Z133 the wording was changed to require a stopper knot but there is NO recommendation of what is used.

Re: RopeTek Sidewinder - Retractable Lanyard Syste

Tom,

On the SideWinder the stopper is hidden inside of the retractor housing. Save for disassembling the unit it could be difficult to visually verify.

My question is:

Will the fact that the manufacturer installs the stopper be enough to satisfy competition requirements or will participants have to disassemble their sidewinders during gear checks?

BBrock,

Comp ready = ??

It is just one size that I know of. Further questions would have to go to Paul.

It should attach to any harness.

Market release should be early 2013, aka SOON hopefully!

Re: RopeTek Sidewinder - Retractable Lanyard Syste *DELETED*

Interesting idea.

Coincidentally I just bought an ISC triple action snap and like it okay overall. I am having a bit of trouble already with the first two levers sticking against each other (little one gets jamed the opposite way it is supposed to go sometimes when pulling the snap back over a branch) and I hope ISC works that out more robustly.

But I like how the crosssection of the hook is more like a biner than my captive eye screw biner/snap I have on one of my lanyards. Allows it to be used in a smaller hole.

And I have a TC on one of my lanyards and like it okay for most stuff too. It takes a different mindset than a hitch, though as it's whole thing is it's rotational position relative to the pull.

For example if you are in close to a branch or the tree and the cinch touches, it can rotate a little and release the lanyard on it's own. And similarly the release handle can be hard to reach in certain in close situations.

And I wish they had a left and right handed version.

But I like it okay overall when a run on a second lanyard.
