Just wondering ... could you use an actual strap (Dynema dogbone) from a quickdraw?

EDIT: I have found the slings in various lengths (11-25cm) can be bought separately for about $5 ea. in nylon, dyneema, polyamide. Just google "quickdraw sling"

Re: I don\'t like the Rope Wrench

I joined the bandwagon 3 weeks ago, and I am thrilled.

Many thanks to Mr. Bingham and his invention for helping me be a more productive climber.

I'm currently climbing "old-school" SRT, with just my hitch and the wrench, lanyard over the shoulder for ascending, and footlocking the single line. I climb on 13mm XTC, so it locks pretty easily on a single line. I'll buy a boatload of ascenders and whatnot eventually, but money doesn't grow on treeclimbers.

In addition to all the positive things mentioned above, I'd like to note that as much as I enjoy traditional secured footlock with a prusik - (there's just something cool about it once it becomes a fluid motion) - I am glad that I no longer need to use this method every day at work. As everyone knows, footlocking doubled rope has a handful of disadvantages, not the least of them being a spike in your heart rate at the very beginning of your climb, sometimes at 8 AM in the morning when your muscles are still cold. Since switching to the Wrench and not using secured footlock with a prusik, I've noticed how much more even my heart rate stays throughout the climb, which makes for an overall more evenly paced, relaxed, productive, healthier, and therefore, safer climb.

High-5 SRT!

Re: I don\'t like the Rope Wrench

I'm wondering when the ZK-2 will be planned, made, and released. I love the RW, but I too can see areas for improvement. One of the things that I'd most like to see is for it to become shorter. If it were shorter it would engage quicker and it would be less likely to swing around and whap you one in the face. Just my 2c.

Re: I don\'t like the Rope Wrench

Just call up treestuff and get one of the petzl dogbones. I use the mid length of the three, cant think of the lengths right now, but the middle one is the perfect length for my setup.

Re: I don\'t like the Rope Wrench

I just ordered my wrench a couple days ago. I can't wait to get it. What do you guys use for your base tie/anchor. I was thinking about just a running bowline tied with the end of my rope with a spliced eye so the tail of the bowline has the eye. Then clip a carabiner in the spliced eye and connect it to the rope to secure the tail. Kind of the same principle as a yosemite tie off.

For this application why not? That's not a life support connection to the RW. Even so dynema in webbing for a static connection (short tether you're not gong to be falling on) is excellent.

Re: I don\'t like the Rope Wrench

Been looking at the Rocket Line, may get some soon. I have been all XTC 1/2" for the past five years, time to move on.

That would work. I use the DMM Rigging hub for my anchor. Hard to explain it but I will see if I can get a picture up.

Re: I don\'t like the Rope Wrench

sometimes simple is best, i do a few different rigs, but if I have enough line, I like the simple rig of walking the rope bag twice around the tree, then 3-4 half hitches around the up-rope, leaving a long bight on the half hitches, I then clip a biner in there and around the two wraps.

Works really well.

I also use a separate sling with a rigging plate tied on, timber hitch it around the trunk, backed up with a couple of half hitches. I then clip a figure 8 in the plate with a biner, rig it like you are going to rappel and do 3-4 half hitches around the up-rope above the 8, again leaving a bight that I can clip back to the rigging plate.

Theoretically , either rig will allow me to be lowered out by a groundy.

I say in theory because reality is that if you weave a nice web of redirects, you best be able to self-rescue because even though the wrench will allow the hitch to work the same with all the redirects doesn't mean your weight can be lowered , the climbing line is still over all those friction points and unless you are working the RW, you are not going to move ;)

Re: I don\'t like the Rope Wrench

Thanks for the info I'll try out a couple of things for my anchor. It's nice to have as many tricks up the sleeve as possible. Good point about being able to be lowered from the ground.

Where is the book to learn all the tricks and the safest way to use srt when you are old school. Rangerdanger trying to teach me but we do bump heads. Mostly his head is harder and I am slower. Guess I will be calling treestuff soon to get my own wrench. Enjoy all the different ideas and will join the dark soon.

It does take time no matter what new climbing technique you are trying. Rangerdanger is a good guy...don't take his advice lightly.

It's comming soon. Stay tuned! That's all I can say at this point.

Cheers,

been busy and haven't had much time to try out my wrench, tried one of my quickdraw slings, but the length was wrong so I came up with this idea after getting some small (3/16") 12 strand....a mini loopie sling, so I can adjust the length

Have to double check, but I'm quite sure this is New England Vectran (V-12?) I believe it's the same as the core of HRC cord, but just 1 mm smaller ( 4,950 lbs. tensile) Debated whether to make a loopie or whoopie, but thought to try the loopie first
