Rolotube Demo

ummmm, stereolab is from England and Pink Martini is from Portland, OR

on the other hand, Air is from France

????

BTW, making sloped cuts with a Rolotube looks like a terrible idea, a tiny change in the angle (sideways, not front/back) would drastically change where the chunk goes.

Seems like a good way to break stuff, if that's what you're going for.

This is the only French thing I'm digging right now:

You can't talk about French music without mentioning Air, this is without doubt one of the greatest intrumental tracks ever written -

Charlotte Gainsbourg did some great stuff with Air -

Cut me some slack, the Pink Martini lyrics are in French and the Stereolab song is called 'French Disko.' That's alot of French. I've seen Stereolab 5 or 6 times live, been a fan since 'Switched On.'

Gotta check out Air. Thanks, guys.

The rollotube looks like a great tool for cutting firewood aloft!

Moon Safari (1998) and Love 2 (2009) are both excellent, but Moon Safari is legendary. Dont go through life without hearing it Tom.

Listening on YouTube now... I've heard La Femme D'Argent before, never knew who it was. Good stuff!

If you haven't heard them already, check out Ladytron. Along the same electro-pop lines.

This thread took a nice turn... I'm jammin' away until it gets above 25*... which might just be all day.

The rolotube is a nice idea I guess but if I'm slabbing off firewood I'd rather push with two hands and make sure it goes where I want it. I can see a piece start going the wrong way, the climber reacts by trying to stop it by taking a hand off the saw and...

That's sorta how I got cut once, a snap cut broke before I wanted and I tried to stop it. Bar nose caught in the cut and the saw kicked back.

Since this thread has already been hi-jacked ........

I just saw Pink Martini in Cleveland 4 weeks ago ......
Very entertaining, Lots of energy & Fabulous Music !
They are a “trans-cultural” 12 person group (number changes w/ the venue).
Very good musicians, used lots of Latin rhythms, but also did songs in French, English, Portuguese, Turkish ! … Etc.
Many songs based on "classical", or theater, or pop; as well as many originals.

I like the idea, I would have to play around with it a little bit but I think the chunk would slide exactly perpendicular to the way you insert the tube in. I think it would be pretty accurate. That is not from experience but I dont see the rollotube pivoting and sending the chunk in the wrong direction, It looks pretty long. good idea. Cheap too Im going to go make one unless they are for sale anywhere around here. Any ideas? This video is the only place I have seen it.

I've got Hang on Little Tomato and Hey Eugene, but man, I'd love to see them live!

I've got "Spendor in the Grass", and "Sympathique". Fortunately for me they put out a lot of their albums in both CD & Vinyl LP (for us who's got antique systems).

I'm going to quit this hi-jack now. Ciao !

First of all...what a bad derail...:(

What about a Non-RoloTube?

Get a square or better, rectangular shim to slip in the kerf.

Fiberglass tent wands would make good rollers I think.

If I were to use metal tubing I'd make sure that there was a plastic or aluminum tip on it in case the chainsaw made a back-jump.

I've used logs, fence poles or whatever to move some sheds and large containers. The rolo becomes a wheel and axle so the piece could be aimed and dropped accurately.

Sorry, Tom. I sort of dismissed the rolotube demo straight away due to the fact that it's in French, and the product seems gimmicky in nature.

It seems like it's fine for slabs, but if it were used for a taller or longer log it looks like it could be dangerous.

What about a wedge on a string? Then you can take bigger pieces. The rolling thing isn't all that important to me. Just as I can cut through it without it pinching on the bar then just push it off.

I was taught this by a high skilled production arborist

the best way in my opinion (and i was taught this by memphis's two best production removal experts) when dealing with big biscuits slightly slope the cut and back chain it almost all the way through and use a wedge on a string to hold the back cut open do a small snipe in the front to release the cut, remove the wedge and voila the biscuit moves like it is on ball bearings. remove turf before bomb out session and then fill holes with sand and replace turf job done. i have move 400 pounder's doing biscuits this way. mark culver swears you can do more, but i haven't had the unpleasant opportunity to have to try.

Good one Jeff.

I would think that wooden dowels on a cord would be a fine substitute for the rollotube.

Would seem safe enough to use on chunks of a height up to 2-3x's the diameter. Maybe more, maybe less.
