Rigging Rope

Hi Tom, l am piecing together a kit for light to medium sized rigging, it looks like this at the moment,
ISC SMALL RED 5 / 8 pulley block
5 / 8 yale multisling to attach above block
Stein RC 2001 fixed bollard
5 / 8 yale multisling ( bollard backup )
I am not sure what type, diameter or brand rigging rope would be compatible to my configuration.
Any advice, suggestions would be greatly appreciated from your good self and indeed the TreeBuzz forum, thanks.

For buying on a budget, check out the ESA block at Treestuff.

It's smooth rolling, has all the great qualities of the ISC, and is cheaper.

I bought the ESA and it looks to be a quality piece. I haven't used it yet. I have others and so does my partner. That's a great suggestion @Crimsonking. My 1st block was a 3/4'' .... it takes all the smaller ropes too. Making stepping up to a 3/4 rope easy.

That's been my dilemma when trying to choose rigging on a budget. Most cheaper blocks have a major setback, whether sharp edges, a screw pin, or being unnecessarily heavy. I've been pleased with this one. The only complaint (not really a complaint) is that it may roll too easily. If using remote rigging, be very careful to not lose your rope tail. Almost did that once.

Brain fart. I was going to say that when buying on a budget, it's nice to have one block that can do most diameters, so you don't have to keep buying bigger blocks as you take on bigger jobs. Got distracted while trying to form a thought earlier and drifted.

Thanks TreeBuzz for all your wonderful suggestions and advice,
This is the light to medium sized rigging kit, l will go with,
after final deliberation.

Teufelberger Sirius DB Bull Rope 14mm (9/16)
Buckingham portawrap 111 large
Yale multisling, 8m long, (24ft.) 18mm (3/4) (for Porty)
ISC Small Red Pulley block Block 100kn.
Yale multisling, 5m long (15ft.) 16mm (5/8) (for block)

15' of sling is a little long for me in the canopy. 10' is more than you'll need. Also consider dead eye slings. Especially in DB. 24' of porty sling is a little long also. 15 may be better. Just my .02 cents.

Good call in my opinion on the Buckingham portawrap.

I bought the Sherrill pow assuming it was the actual American made successor, when in fact it is a Chinese made copy. Not necessarily an issue if you know that on the front end, but that fact was not listed when I ordered it.

When I posted a comment on the item page on Sherrill's site, it was sensored.

The product works fine for what it's worth, but both the lack of information up front, and more importantly the way my comment was handled has put me off from Sherrill since then.

Ha! That's funny! I had my local welder make that when the 2nd version porty just came out. SS wasn't available yet. Mine's sch80 SS pipe and 1/2 round stock. I showed him a pic and told him I wanted SS but bigger. He charged me a hundred dollar bill. That's a RE d biner and DMM oval for size comparison.

Perfect.

No, I was just confused. Now that I know their "locally sourced" I get the way you stated it.

I thought you were suggesting your "Sherrill" pow was American made, got me wondering if they switched it up.

Now it all makes sense.

Thanks 96coal449 ( Craig ) for your .02cents.
This is a valuable tip for me, ( you
got me thinking again ), you make perfect sense.
  • I have decided to add a 16mm (5/8) Teufelberger
  • Sirius Dead Eye Sling , 12ft (4m) to the mix for the block.
16mm (5/8) Yale multisling 15ft (5m) will now be for the Porty,
I will still purchase the Yale 18mm (3/4) 8m (24ft) multisling as a backup.
The reason I choose the aforementioned sling was l figured the larger diameter would be more rugged for the Porty and of course if I met with the odd larger than usual Tree base, l would have plenty of length to tie a cow hitch.

Thanks Evan for your interest,
Pretty bad form the way your comment was handled.
I called my arborist supplier and asked, could you tell me the difference between the Buckingham portawrap 111 large and the Sherrill Tree 1V portawrap, he said that the Sherrill Tree portawrap is just an imitation, he did not add whether it was better or worse, and l did not ask, enough said.
I have Buckingham spurs, throw bags, rope bags and chainsaw lanyards, their stuff is really well made, excellent quality and as tough as nails
Buckingham will always be first choice for me.

I'm curious why you'd pick a fixed bollard over a port-a-wrap for light to medium rigging. The Porty is considerably more versatile in my limited experience.

Hey, Dragonslayer! You may be about to teach me something here. What is it that you find yourself able to do with a Port-a-Wrap that you find you are unable to do with a bollard that is held in place from above? Yours is a comment I've never heard before, so I would love to hear what more you have to say on the differences between the two items.

Thanks in advance for any answers you choose to provide.

Tim
