RigEm&Roll job

diagram to try to explain what i was thinking, maybe I'm wrong.

If it does try to make each pick horizontal, dispite the weight distribution in the limb....

a climber could just anticipate this and just make a top ripping cut and keep motioning the crane to lower the piece to horizontal as he keeps progressing in the cut. Then finish the cut when the limb is fully horizontal.

Sounds a bit scary. Many species are very brittle so it might not work as you described. But I get the idea.

I rotated the pic in question. The strength of grip would be critical if you were removing a dead tree.

I saw it grip at the show and it grips hard.

it's battery powering hydraulic.

it warns you when battery getting low.

slide dead battery out, slide in the freshly charged one.

I dont know, i think i like my straps too much. I would like to try it an see how it works. I do think it would cause too much movement in the piece after it was cut. I don't like that at all. I like nice smooth clean cuts!!

Re: RigEm&Roll job

Hey, Xman:

Nice diagram! Yes, the Rigem&roll behaves just as you described on non-horizontal picks. How long did it take you to draw that?

Royce:

The RigEm&Roll consistantly has smoother picks than a single cable, but obviously less smooth than using 3 or more cables, which I've noticed a lot of guys on this forum do.

Thanks for the feedback!

I think that's what Master Blaster is reacting to.

masterblaster, take it easy on the guy! What have you invented lately?

Tierson that thing is sick! Love it cant wait to try it. Great pics, and work! Best of luck in your future with this. It will make all our jobs easier and safer.

Re: RigEm&Roll job

What do you find to be the number 1 advantage of useing this compaired to a traditional set-up. (Traditional set-up being crane with a strap or cable)

Re: RigEm&Roll job

Royce not sure if you mean me or not but Ill put my .02 in.

I find it would be much faster on a species with a spreading canopy, i.e. Oaks, Beeches etc etc. You could leave the climber on the spar, and cut each limb individually. Then when the piece gets to the chipper you can put it on the deck, start to feed it and release when you want. NOONE has to get near the piece to untie a shackle and risk injury if the piece rolls. THEN...if the piece isn't going through the chipper easily, you can simply cable down grab back on and reposition the piece, instead of having a guy get into the fray and put the winch from the chipper on and off.

Again my .02

Re: RigEm&Roll job

Yeah i think that would be really slick!! What about when your pick is outta-sight or your in a really thick tree, like a pine! How would the operator be able to see what he is attached to?

We have cameras on the first section of boom on both of our cranes, with color LCD screens in the drive cab and operators cabs. This is great for the operator when making blind picks or sketchy picks and he wants his own view of whats going on. They are remote operated/moved from in the cab. We also use the Earmark 2 way headsets when making blind or NON straightforward picks. So much safer to be able to talk to each other.

Not sure how others do it.........?

Re: RigEm&Roll job

Now thats technology! We use hand signals on the blind picks and an occasional beep of the horn from the crane operator! I never knew cranes had cameras, now that could make things much easier.
Thanx BostonBull for all the answers!! Hope to see the Pats go all the way!!

Re: RigEm&Roll job

I'm sorry, we have a third guy relaying the hand signals, if that makes more sence.

Re: RigEm&Roll job

Hey Royce and BostonBull:

Headsets are a great way for the crane operator and climber to get things done safely, RigEm&Roll or no.

You're right about the RigEm&Roll being better for horizontal canopies. I've had a whole lot of people ask me for one that tilted and I've drawn up a design, so maybe in a year or two we'll have that for taking pines and other totally vertical wood.

As for the number one advantage, it's hard to say. With a really fast climber it doesn't necessarily speed things up all that much, but for most people it does. Community Tree Service said that they really like not having to unrig limbs, for safety reasons. There's a couple of other things, like being able to take some dead trees down without tying into the crane, or being able to rig limbs in their middle or beyond without doing difficult climbing. It depends on how you've been doing it, too.

I'll try to post that other job this weekend, right now my baby's crying and it's time to go! (she's only 6 months old!)

Re: RigEm&Roll job

Tierson...Congrats on the new born. The more they cry the more they love you.

Hey Xman, i just demoed the R&R, IT IS THE ONE THE BIGGEST THINGS TO HIT OUR INDUSTRY IN 20 YEARS!!! I was sceptical until i tried it. I would say it is a must have for any company that crane rmv's!!! (That pick probably did balance out slowly; when the grapple is tilted, the cable is turned 45% or so and then the pick balances out very slowly. I even had afew picks do that) I'm so amazed about the R&R!!! (I'm about to post so many photos, over the next week, that you'll be sick of seeing it!!!)

well, since i've already got hydro power and a grapple at the end, I've pretty much got the same thing, but the grapple needs to hang down farther from the boom to keep stuff away. So, I guess the R&R on a 10 foot cable might be better. I just prefer slings, tried my grapple for picks and most cases it's not desirable.

Maybe if I had mine hanging down on a 4 foot steel pole, it would be better.

glad you are finding the R&R useful, looking forward to see the pictures and getting sick of it.
