Rig N' Wrench

I'm not going to name names but, I was surprised to see a Rope Runner being used at a demo. Pretty ballsy at a TCIA event, lol. I thought they only approved the RW after many debates.

I think they acknowledge that new kit is coming down the pike. I don't think they would openly endorse it, but I don't think they see it as an unsafe device. Also, they trust what the boots on the ground tell them.

This little device has me interested in SRT now. Excited to go to a couple SRT basics demos

I was pruning a mature sugar maple with some large declining limbs the other day. There were three large leaders to remove, adjacent to power lines and the home. Instead of piecing them out slowly and threading the peices thru the canopy only to have them get stuck. Then fish them out later. I was able to tip tie them, the groundling pulled them over to the rig point and lowered them with ease thru the canopy. This is the major selling point for me on the rig wrench. I was smiling all afternoon.

I just need to get a different rope. My old fluffy twelve strand line is not super efficient. Maybe my old xtc 24 strand.

So did you tip tie and base tie? I'm wondering if you have a porty and a block and a ground guy what the true benefit of this is. I understood the main benefit of this and the thunder sling was to be able to do everything mostly without a porty and a groundie. You have to understand I'm usually about a year behind everyone else in understanding and appreciating these now gadjets. Couldn't you rig high and tip tie just the same with a block? I'm not a naysayer. Just not getting it. Sorry. I'm obviously a blockhead. I'm more interested with Mac and jeffgu'a impression of it.

Basically, it serves as a mini porta wrap that weights next to nothing. For light stuff, it speeds up the rigging process. Everything is rigged in the tree. For more technical and heavy stuff, it turns a 3 person rigging job into a 2 man job. It is a controlled friction brake for your tag lines. Provides a lot more control and efficiency in the tree. Huge time saver. Of course, you could do it old school with a couple wraps to hold the tag line, which I've done many times, but with the wrench, I get a lot of control and consistency, less guess work, and less rope burn.

Edit: it also provides mechanical advantage, which is huge!

I had the same problem. Anything under 12mm works well or 12mm with a stiff jacket or smooth coat.

With a block you can tip tie and pull but you have no friction. If you put it in a portawrap, you lose all ability to pull. A thundering also does not allow pull as the friction is in both directions. With the wrench you can pull the load up bit have the benifits of friction while lowering. It's very awesome.

16 strand has been my favorite so far because I can pull the line through but it still provides significant friction. You want to be able to pull the line through the wrench or it can suck. I tried it with double braid and I probably could have rigged 500 lbs but I could not work with the rope because I couldn't pull it through the wrench.

So I've read this entire thread again. I curse you guys! Now I understand and have to order more stuff. You guys are costing me a lot of money I'd waste on tobacco and Starbucks. Geez. Stop being so damn brilliant already. I am proud of the fact that I am now on the same level of understanding as all you smart guys!!!:tanguero:thanks to everyone.

Yeah Steve...I've got the same problem. this board is great at promoting and teaching about products. Just when I think I've got all I need (and I really do), the gear junkie rears its ugly head. I didn't think I needed anything else, then a customer who owns an orchard supply shop wanted some weekend work done for trade today. Of course, I went through the catalog and found $500 of gear easily. Omni block, more rope, rope bags, and some pole saw blades. I just wish he had access to Ropetek - guess the whistle will do for now.
