Retrieval line

What are you guys using for a retrieval line for canopy anchors? I climb with my rope bag for most removals. With 120 foot climb line. I like a thinish line to pull a canopy anchor. I’d like to stuff this line in the bottom of my rope bag so when I rap out and run out to retrievel tailtill I can just quickly attach it or heck Keep them connected. Any recommendations for lines?

Most rope makers have 6 or 7mm accessory cordage that will work fine for pulling down an anchor. Go up to 8 or 9 and you might even be able to put it in an ascender for those "come on now, out of the tree," moments.

The cordage I would use would be bright colored and only used as a pull down line. That way the crew knows what the line is for.

Having the cord stuffed in a bag allows me to deploy it from the TIP and down a ways in the tree. Tie it off so that the bag doesn't go to the ground though. As the climber zig zags their way down the tree more rope can be deployed. This keeps the bagged rope above the work zone in the tree so it doesn't add to snagging.

The core of a rope could be pulled out leaving just the sheath for this purpose too.

I hated the stretchiness of thinner accessory cord so I got some static 6 mm canyoneering pull cord:

But even that felt too thin, was stiff enough that it was hard to stuff in a small accessory bag, and needed a throw weight in the bag to drop it from the TIP to help it get down. I switched to 8 mm Sirius with a spliced eye (or sometimes use a retired climb line if I'm attaching it on the ground before pulling it up).

I have several lengths of rope that I can fit to the height of tree I'm dealing with. Both ends of my ropes are spliced with tight eyes. After setting and isolating my throwline I pull the rope in and tie a butterfly about 6 to 10 feet from the end that returns to ground, use a quickie from the butterfly to the falling side then connect a rated locking biner to both eyes. This does secveral things, I have my canopy anchor that I then move down when I'm coming down the spare. I can take all the rope with me like drt system when I redirect through the tree without the excessive friction of the traditional canopy tie in. I can reset my TIP without having to pull a ton of rope up the tree and the leg opposite the one I am on is a preset access line for rescue even if I am lanyard on. The tail end up to the carabiner connection automatically is my retrieval line. Works great for me.

@oldoakman I like that idea and can see it being very useful him lots of situations. The set up I’m working on refining is for a Spur Ascent removal where I make my way up the tree With a rope bag on my saddle when I reach my tip i pay out my climb line back down to the ground, tie a AB and cinch it with a pinto. What’s left in the bag is my retrieval leg what I am looking to do is have a thinner retrievel line stuffed in my bag below my climb line to extend my retrieval leg

Usually whatever rope I was using for rigging. I have a ditty bag with 150' of 6mm cord but I hardly ever use it since a rigging line is usually closer at hand and a lot less stretchy.

I rec climb and often bookmark favourite trees here and there, that I go back to semi-regularly. I have been using gray paracord for this since it is almost invisible when left in the tree and therefore does not invite curiousity from hikers or the park rangers. I just use the same piece of cord to pull my rope up and it doubles as a pull-down line afterwards. Paracord is amazingly strong stuff, no real stretch to it, and turns up on eBay all the time in 1200 rolls fairly cheap.
