Replacing/backing-up the bridge on a Butterfly II

rainy PNW!
I recently added a large Petzl swivel to my bridge and I love how it has kept my rope aligned. The problem is that the swivel has totally shredded the sheath on my bridge. I have not seen any wear on the load bearing part of the bridge. So the question is:

Should I replace the bridge?

or

Shoul I keep the existing bridge and use another cord in there as a back-up. The second cord would be there to protect the main bridge from further abrasion.

Thanks for the help.

Somebody should post a link to the story about Todd Skinner, whose worn saddle gave way and killed him.

Re: Replacing/backing-up the bridge on a Butterfly

Except Todd's harness was over five years old, and was subjected to numerous falls. I do agree though that it should be switched out!!!

Re: Replacing/backing-up the bridge on a Butterfly

The new replacement bridges for the B-fly are braided too, and they don't fray from the swivels like the old nylon sheath ones.

Re: Replacing/backing-up the bridge on a Butterfly

I thought that would be the response. I'll get that replaced soon. The saddle is about three years old anyways, and I've been looking for an excuse to get a Petzl Sequoia. Perhaps that would be te better course of action...

Thanks again for the input.

Re: Replacing/backing-up the bridge on a Butterfly

I've replaced my bridge twice now with 1/2 New England Saftey Blue using scaffold hitches. Works great, is cheap and adjustable.

I did not like how the original bridge seemed to place wear on the stitches.

Re: Replacing/backing-up the bridge on a Butterfly

yea, the single bridge line kinda stresses me some, too. been thinking of putting in a second line for a backup

Re: Replacing/backing-up the bridge on a Butterfly

I'd also consider what caused the damage in the first place. Are you using the newer, rounded swivel? I think that wouldn't cause damage to the rope fibers.

But yeah, replace what you got right now.

I think a second bridge is overkill, though.
