Relocating

Location
Minnesota
I have hit sort of a plataue in my current postion, and there isnt much oppertunity to advance further in the position. My manager has said that in order to increase my oppertunity for advancement I need to relocate. My fiance and I are both ok with moving, but it needs to be the right oppertunity for the both of us.

My manager has made one offer to me, but I declined for a few reasons. Without getting into to much detail, the offer had too many, "Potentially this could happen" and no, "We Gaurantee this will happen." Basically I felt I would be taking a huge risk on some "Maybes" and my employer was not taking any risk by not giving me any gaurantees.

Has anyone relocated for their job? What was your experience like? Any advice for me?

Hello there,

Yes, I took a relocation package for my company back in 2001. It was not in this industry. It was for a major 400 company and there was no promise of anything. There never is and never can be any guarantees of items that can happen, Things change.. I was outsource within 6 month, had to reapply for my job with the new company, and to boot, when i was hired it was to support the same company that just outsourced me.

A few suggestions, never close any doors, Be prepared to move back home on your own dime if you need to, sometime change is good.

for me - it was a mixed bag, I got the new job - made way more money, but ended with a divorce of a 22 year marriage, got to move from the city to a mountain home and started a new life.

Doors open, doors close. Sometimes you need to step through them to see where they lead.

I have never tested a door, found it open, and walked through it with regret...perhaps immediate remorse on occasion, but in the long run never with regret.

sometimes just being willing to take that step allows other circumstances to occur that otherwise would have remained hidden.

There is a path out there for you to follow...look for it and you will find it!

Thanks for the advice. One reason I posted this was to see if I was being too unrealistic with my expectations. I still do not feel comfortable with my managers first offer, but I have told him that I am willing to work with them to find something that works for the both of us.

Thanks Again.
