Rehashing Contractor Insurance

Crimsonking

Been here a while
I searched for the info but came up empty. Is worker's comp required for a contractor? A company told me he would have to pay wc if I didn't have any in addition to the gl I would have. Who has something?

Your state may or may not require you to carry WC insurance. Even if you're exempt from carrying WC, your client may require it anyway, in order to better protect themselves. In that case, you can discuss with them the cost of that insurance, as well as who is going to pay for it. You may also be able to have them hire you through a temporary or employee leasing company, which would provide WC, for the duration of the contract.

Yeah- all depends on what state you're in. Both insurances are super different. In California, yore required to have both if you want to do jobs greater than $500 and have employees.

In PA my business subjected to a yearly audit for workers comp for my one employees (the worker comp is through the state). The only sub contractor I hire is the crane company...this is the form they want me to fill out proving they are not an employee this year.

So that kinda shows what they are looking for. By sub contractors not carrying workers comp, like my crane guy, it does make headaches for us businesses that hire them
