"Redwood Season" Arrived

Re: \"Redwood Season\" Arrived

These are very beautiful trees and places.
One day I would like to re-visit (family vacations as a child) the redwoods and I would love to see the sites you have visited.
Question: Is it possible to list the Lat and Long on these locations so that it can easily be found on Google?

Thanks for sharing.

You could practically just enter the name of these places and Google Maps or Google Earth will show you where they are at. Like this moment, I went to Google maps, and after typing just "Jedediah" ... it already supplied the entire "Jedediah Smith Redwood State Park" as an option, which I clicked.

Here's a photo of Sitka Spruce, near the gate to that park. This was just a couple of hours after the first big rain came at the tail end of summer.

Beautiful, Mario. I think photography is your calling.

[/ QUOTE ]

Appreciate that ... and if it's calling, then I'm not leaving ...

Hey .. just did something way outside my normal 9 dots ...

Saw a lens I was totally unfamiliar with advertised on Craigslist, and after a bit searching for commentary online, ended up buying a vintage Canon FL 55mm f/1.2 lens with a conversion kit to mount on my digital Canon 5D Mk II.

$230 for both lens and the Ed Mika adapter together ... so seemed low-risk investment.

You've been in this game for a long time ... guessing you may be familiar with this baby .. apparently its a 1964 to 1971 era lens.

Re: \"Redwood Season\" Arrived

Large aperture, fast lens. Fixed focal length, sharp lens. That lens was going for three to four hundred back in its day when the dollar was strong. The equivalent lens today would probably cost twice as much, I would imagine.

Shooting fully opened and focused at infinity you should get crystal clear landscapes in the dimmest of light.

The only con is the 55 mm focal length. I've long preferred a wider angle lens. But being a normal lens the shots can stitch together seamlessly and you can achieve the wide angle effect even better. And with the mega pixel imagers that lens is going to be a damn good asset in your kit.

I'd say you got a good buy there, and good thinking, too.

Oh, I was wondering. Is the depth of field scale on the lens accurate with the conversion?

[/ QUOTE ]

That's something that may take me a couple of weeks to get used to and figure out. I didn't even realize what the lines were until tonight.

Just dropped in on a camera shop today for an extra compact flash card, and the man there pointed out the lines and mentioned what they were, adding it's a good extra feature. I was wondering what the heck they were, so I'm glad he said something.

Re: \"Redwood Season\" Arrived

That's something about the digital cameras I do not understand. Even some of the more expensive digital models lack depth of field scales on their lenses to help one focus by.

There must be something about digital cameras that makes this so. Though I've been unable to find out the full facts.

With film everything that falls in the lines of dept of field will be in sharp focus. Depending on the aperture you shoot at. The scale lines are sometime color coded with the aperture setting.

With my old Nikon S2 and its compatiable 35 mm lens everything would be in sharp focus from 6 inches to infinity at f22. At f4.5 the dept of field would shift from 6 ft to infinity. If you focused any closer than 6 feet then infinity would be soft.

In a nutshell the depth of field scale gives you latitude to shift your focus closer or farther away with great accuracy. And you really don't need to focus through the lens. It can all be done by the scale. Really cool

Re: \"Redwood Season\" Arrived

Just went back through redwood photos from a couple of weeks ago, and one I skipped-over ended up virtually the best for a large print. I picked up a 20" x 30" print of this one yesterday and it's so nice looking enlarged.

Howland Giant. Probably the largest stem diameter known 300' up from the ground. At 300' it's still 6 feet diameter.

Re: \"Redwood Season\" Arrived

Hope I can get down to see the Montgomery Giant someday. Sort of a trek from north Oregon, but someday.

Recently, after I encountered the wedding and at Stout Grove, and deciding to make wedding photography available in forest or redwoods, I did a few test shots with a local model. Tried my new 35mm, plus the 85mm and 135mm to compare difference.

All the lenses got some decent photos. The attached was 135mm.

Here's phase II building on that last one.

This test shot was taken in the redwoods at Jedediah Smith park this last Monday, and the new Canon 85mm 1.2 lens ...

Eau, nice Doc. Like how the women looks like she is in a dream. As a painter, I would stop short to do a painting of the boat scene. Thanks

Your reply about painting reminds me about my old 1960s lens converted for digital. I got it for portrait experimentation but it was too soft wide-open. While for sale on Craigslist, I photographed some roses and the lens gave a painting quality to the print. So I decided to keep it for flower photos.

Ended up meeting several new redwood coast locals this last trip, including the one man from Hiouchi who enjoys photography in forests.

Re: \"Redwood Season\" Arrived

Last weekend, found an area in Jedediah Smith redwoods that had more large Douglas Firs in close proximity than I've seen in that park before.

No new records, but big enough to get me back there to look more.

Here's one of the larger ones.
