Could I please have the exact map co-ordinates for 'Dog Soldier'? its important as we're sitting around here having beers discussing the route of our ninja climbing extravaganza and 'Dog Soldier' is definately on the itinery.

Its great that you've named that tree, now tell us exactly where it is.

Thanks

There is an initiation, with levels to achieve first - some beers is just the Padawan Learner stage. Step 2 ...

There is a Biker bar at the edge of the redwoods called Hawg Wild. Great grub - check the menu: Hawg Wild Biker Bar Restaurant in Ocick, CA

Used to be the Lumberjack. Anyway ...... see the dollars hanging from the cieling ??? It's a game. Goes like this:

You put down a dollar, and challenge the owner to a drinking contest. You loose, and you sign the dollar as "I'm a Loser" and it hangs on the ceiling. If you win ... the owner hangs $100 on the ceiling.

You must do this first, to advance to the next level. Note: there are no $100 bills on the ceiling - but there is a spot

Re: Redwood Giant Discovered ?? / \"Dog Soldier\"

Guy,

Yes, in a nutshell. Those rules don't factor in root swell correctly, and the problem always remains that people interpret their measurements following the rules. And in the end erroneous results follow.

Years ago I hiked some ways to see trees of documented measure only to be disappointed through finding out the measure was an interpretation.

I'm not saying Mario's tree in this post is suspect. I haven't see it up close and personal. But I can vouch for his accuracy in all the rest of the trees I was present to witness the measure. And he was spot on.

While steelhead fishing in the winter I stayed at the Palms Motel,, right next to the Lumber Jack Tavern. Oh dare I say in the 70's. The Palms was the ritz and the Lumber Jack was exactly what it said. There was every brand of logger, timber faller and rigging slinger in that bar. And protesters were not even heard of.

You sure? I was in that bar a few years back, granted it wasn't the 70s as it was very quiet, hardly a soul in the place. What struck me as unusual was that the patrons seemed oblivious to the fact that a prominent local Sasquatch was holding a sit down protest right there in the middle of the bar.

Apparently he was protesting the arrival of the canopy scientists and photographers from the National Geographic magazine who had arrived to take pictures of canopy scientists dangling between giant Douglas firs. His protest was in vain as the canopy scientists are still there today and the mag got the money shots it was after.

I managed to get a quick pic of the Sasquatch's sit down protest before I was swiftly ejected from said bar for beating the local big dog in an hastily arranged arm wrestle tournament.

Sasquatch sit down protest circa 1997 -

Logging around Orick pretty much folded by the 80's. That was shortly after the national parks took over the once corporate timber lands. Today it's just tourism holding the town together along with the few holdouts that stuck around. I haven't been in the Lumber Jack since then.

Gerry have you taken up this butt swell (sounds like a post - Thanksgiving issue) question with American Forests? If it doesn't bother Van Pelt then it doesn't bother me.

axe, I'm glad you escaped. Next time offer them a cup of tea or a Chew of bacca and they might share the Secrets of the Forest with you.

Guy ...

There is much to learn about these forests.

There is not just the butt of the tree, but others parts to deal with as well.

Re: Redwood Giant Discovered ?? / \"Dog Soldier\"

Guy,

The issue of including root swell while taking basal measurements has been debated for years. I read in a number of different articles years past now. So far as I know, without any hope of resolve in how to factor it in.

It's just a personal peeve of mine really. But in that first pic I posted in this thread, some yahoo could easily give a false impression about the size of the tree on the DBH measure. Because that tree stands on flat ground and the DBH of the root swell would make it well over 20 foot through.

The record holder Sitka Spruce at Sea Side, Oregon is a good example of this. It stood as a champion on the points it gained from its root flare. And I know of many truly bigger spruce than it, but the standards give them lesser points. It's a short coming of the standards for measure and a problem with big tree hunters taking advantage of it.

Re: Redwood Giant Discovered ?? / \"Dog Soldier\"

Guy, you might like Robert Van Pelt's "Forest Giants of the Pacific Coast" It's on amazon.com......He measures the largest trees with his extremely precise laser, which calculates wood volume to very precise levels. And includes many of the multiple iterations of the complex trees. Certainly a more accurate way to measure a tree.
