i went on a little trip to this tree and climbed it. it intimidated me.

wish i had some better pics up in the canopy but i didn't get much worth sharing. if anyone wants me to post them i can.

note: anyone else here climbed it? i found an old petzl screwgate hung with some throwline at about 200' ?

Hey Kathy, anytime you want to go just let me know. We climbed this one two years ago out by Lake Quinault Lodge. It was over 10ft dbh and around 250ft tall

If any of you folks do get a chance to climb one of these giants, you'll never forget it. This is a shot of the trees around us from the top. Some of the big tops you see are all in the 9 to 12 ft dbh range

this tree is near port renfrew on vancouver island bc. it's about 2.5hrs drive right to the tree from victoria, last 17k on a gravel road. you could hop on the port alice ferry and make a weekend trip of it Kathy.

its over 40' around and 242' tall. it is the largest member of the pine family.

i was able to set a line with a bigshot at about 130'. took quite a few tries to get a decent set. i couldn't believe how much stuff was growing up there on the mossy limbs. there was even a brand new little fir, already about an inch and a half thru, growing on one of the lower limbs.

i climbed up to about 210' where most of the live limbs end on the main stem. the highest parts of the tree are arms that come up from lower down on the tree to surpass the broken top. the broken top (at about 230' i would guess) still looked to be about 4' or 5' thru. i read in a book on PNW giants that this tree is the only one in the world aside from the redwoods that is 7' thru at 144' high.

Seems like some of the sequoias I've seen are still that fat at that height. /forum/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Any which way, that is a most impressive tree. I hope to climb some giants someday. Thanks for sharing Gord.

yup kathy i'll be competing, not sure if i'll have extra time around then or not. i would definitely climb it again sometime tho...

sorry leon i meant sequoias (both types) when i said redwoods.
