Rarely used option when your crane won't reach.

Calm down Cory, the McMahon's obviously know their stuff, and I've never met two pro climbers that agree on the best methods of doing hardly anything.....

I'd like to work with the McMahon brothers, and feel sure they could teach me a trick or two.

Fair enough. But after watching Tahune, if they want to leave stubs or do anything else unconventional, it's safe to assume they have an extremely good reason to do so.

And was out of there by 3 o'clock. Pretty amazing

HUH???? Looked to me like they was there at like 4-5am in morning just to get set up? I have to say for that tree with a crane 10-12 hours is no so hot.

To my eye that euc he worked wasn't much more than 130-140 feet, and had little under it that would preclude either lowering the heads, or just bombing them once they were hanging straight down.

UUmmm???? bushes all behind it, all those fixed to ground picnic tables, road side fixed post, road needed to be closed.

Say you've got a leader or top up above the reach of your crane at 125 feet, and your crane only has 100 feet of stick.

How can that pick be made with no dynamic forces exerted on the crane's hook?

I think the original question was a good one and there should be some good creative answers on here but I haven't really seen anyone contributing, just bickering about a video.

I have 3 different things I have done and will contribute later.

You know me, i have to draw some diagrams or show some pictures.

likely get time this weekend.

Oh, btw; I wouldn't feel good (myself)letting a top hinge over and get caught by stationary rope or sling. I'd have a block and let a groundman let it run for a little distance, then hook to it with the crane, that's one way we've done it. (i know you said there wasn't much at stake beneith the tree, but I wouldn't want to be hard on the slings or rope)

two more to share....

Here I will. Buy or rent a bigger crane.

Re: Rarely used option when your crane won\'t reach.

Get the right tool for the job . Your not going to be able to jam a Tulip head like that Euc , there will be baseball bats flying every where . I'm with X on this one , you should lower them down a little to ease the shock . I never worked with Euc trees before but those tops were long , I wouldn't say huge . I do a lot of crane work with a 23 ton Terex , 96 feet of boom , we'll grab all the leaders and lower the tops down till the crane can reach them , no need to get crazy , 25 - 40 feet is not that hard to deal with , or is it ? Crazy is cool though if you have a camera .

Re: Rarely used option when your crane won\'t reach.

Be careful people, the McMahons couldn't hold a candle to Jomoco when it comes to inventing leather cambium savers.

Re: Rarely used option when your crane won\'t reach.

there's always some einstein that claims a 12 but as always, he never produces more than the mouth it takes to hold the weight. if u ???? sherbrooke tree and the video proof they provide us with via youtube, ya'll need to check ur rulers boys,i promise u this ( ) aint 12".

Re: Rarely used option when your crane won\'t reach.

did anyone say it was only 12" leads he was roping out??

I know I said 10-12 but thats hours. And sorry to say yes 10-12 hours for that tree with a crane is not very impressive.

Oh enough already!

There are probably thousands and thousands of climbers in the US alone that are far better than my lame old orthopedic azz. Even here in San Diego I'm pretty much a washed up old joke of a has been climber.

I once thought I could hang with the pros on a moto X track, but thinking and doing are an entirely different thing. I got my azz handed to me a long long time ago at saddle back raceway in orange county, all I ended up with was broken bones and a bent moto X bike!

Chill out guys, and have pity on an old climber held together with nylon steel and carbon fiber braces.

The McMahon's are the real deal, and I apologise for second guessing them from my lounge chair.

Let's try and concentrate on education, techniques and methodology in this biz rather than my many shortcomings.

Way to give it to yourself Jo. Sometimes it takes this measure to get everyone to give you a second chance. Most wouldn't take the step. Well done.

And, you are right to do so. Graeme is a real deal arborist who does some super-creative jobs.

Re: Rarely used option when your crane won\'t reach.

Many happy returns to yourself and family Mark! From Graeme and Gus

Hey Erik - yep, tower = bucket

Re: Rarely used option when your crane won\'t reach

Great explanation, Angus. I'd seen that video some time ago, and understood exactly why you guys did what you did. Didn't know there were several trees.

I never saw this old thread till now...or I'd have chomped on some heads....
