Rabid raccoon goes after us, Cujo style.

I'm kinda fuzzy on it. I read a story in a weekly paper not too long ago about some possible rabid animal attack, where the victim had to also go to the ER for shots, preemptively and got shafted from the ER insurance. Well, the animal wound up being negative for rabies. I believe that the victim of the attack wound up going to their doctor, raised a stink and made them give the shots instead of the ER. There has to be some way to keep the ER out of the loop, and the costs down.

Glad your kids are safe, oh yeah, you too. I just don't know what I would do with out your witty sharp tongue and cool videos

I think you killed a Chupacabra.

Now that we have been getting our rabies shots, I can deal with some rabid blood spatter on my face. I might try an X-rigging ring sling next time to take out the rabid animal. maybe with the new "beast" ring.

Yes, I thought Chupacabra as well. I should have shaved it naked and could have made millions on a video of it running around.

Yes, funny call on the "whaling" mistake. I'm not a good writer.

I was a little wrong on the hospital visits.

They do suck though. But it is using two local hospitals.

First visit, local hospital ER, no appointment possible.

I was there 3 hours, my wife and kids there 4.5 hours.(because I had a tree emergency)

Not just one shot.

ONE vaccine shot.

Then antibody shots, number depending on your weight.

I had 7 shots total.

Wife=4

Daughter=3

Son= 2

Kids did NOT like it.

The antibody shots make it feel like your muscle is going into a cramp.

Then second visit is 3 days later. A vaccine shot again, just one.

Kids get a fever each time. us parents don't seem to.

they say kids fever might get worse each time.

3 or 4 more vaccine shots to go... I forget how many.

Oh well. I'll be immune to rabies for like 3 years after this. Then I can get boosters to keep it up if I want to.

It's amazing how many rabies cases I've learned of. Hospital says it's had many cases, similar stories to ours.

I hear they don't even have rabies in Canada, isn't that crazy

It's true.
Even the animals have universal health care here.

My friend got them in the stomach years ago, but they may use the arm or butt now, not sure.

I have always wondered why there is no available rabies vaccine until you come into contact with it. It seems so easy to transmit, you'd think it would be an option.

Actually, you're not that far off...check out the link...lol

I actually did this...not much fun...vomited 2 or 3 times within two hours! I was trying to get hired to work for the MNR with this rabbies baiting program...plane is flying very fast at low altitude, and because of this the ground heating creates crazy thermals that send the plane up and down and even sideways as the Pilots constantly try to regain level flight. Not to mention wherever you look things are moving, the conveyor's moving the vaccines for the animals out of the plane, the landscape just below which you can see very well through the hole in the bottom of the plane is moving. And because the pilots are trying to maintain a grid flight path, they bank hard...and the vaccines don't smell that great either..

I believe Ontario spends a few million dollars each year for this, but still Ontario does have a vey limited number of rabies cases...

Anonymity, what's the MNR? That's crazy that they bait the coons over there... good investment, smart.

This raccoon lives under my deck and my dog will corner him at night. I would like to also get this immunity for my family in the future.

...I did just see a beautiful coyote come down the driveway yesterday. It walked right down to the front door, I ran out, threw one rock, and it was long gone. I've never seen anything with rabies though... reminds me of the zombies in that movie, 28 Days Later.

Bixler,

MNR is acronym for Ministry of Natural Resources...a government department that deals with many of Ontario's natural resources...and the Baits for the raccoons were filled with a vaccine to prevent animals from getting sick with rabies...

X,
Nice job,
You're engine is running on all 8... I believe every word.. that's not the kind of story you make up... PRIMAL MOMENT! How many can say their family was attacked by a wild animal?

Glad everyone is OK... some might say it would have been better to abandon the dog and go back for the kids, but they would have been very emotionally damaged if they had to witness their dog getting torn up.

In any case, you don't have much of a choice in such situations. Your response is much more instinctual than intellectual. I think the work we do, regularly making life and death type decisions, gets our brain wired a little differently than most.

Only thing to do differently would have been to quarantine the dog. That's a good lesson for all of us. I didn't realize the virus was so contagious.

Reminds me of a story where a friend's cousin had to shot a black bear that was chasing his 9 year old daughter, with her in the background.. His only mistake was reporting the incident to the game warden. They charged him with shooting a bear out of season. Had to bring in the little girl to court.

I AM guessing you'll be having your ammo situation a bit better organized for next time.. another good lesson. Thanks for sharing X..
