Question on Huskys?

My Dad is having a few old Huskys repaired from when he won them awhile back at Trade Shows. One is a 288 and the other I don't know. What I would like to know is when he goes out for the chain, will a Stihl chain work and what is the best bar for the buck. Were looking at a 36in Oregon bar, but maybe bigger. From what he told me the 288 is comparable in hp, size to an 066, so this will be a backup one for our 066. Thanks

The 288 is not in the same class as the 066/660. I own both the 288XP and a stihl 660. The 288 is a ballsy saw and certainly one of my favorites but it wont pull chain like a 660. I personally wouldnt recommend running a 36 inch bar on the 288. maybe with a full skip chain.

Rangerdanger,

You asked what bar for the 288xp. I've had mine 10 years. I've maintained it well and the main reason that it still works is that I never put anything bigger than a 24inch bar on it.

A 36 inch bar is way too big for a 288xp to work efficiently. You'll kill it.

Check out the those killer jungle spikes!!!

I run my 288XP Lite with a 24 inch bar usually also. I love it with a 24 inch bar. Not the fastest saw out there and not the lightest but with the 24 inch, it pulls steady and will stay strong in the meanest of wood.
