Hi. All.
I just noticed that the edge of my cutting wheel developed funny looking recessed areas at the outer edge in front of some teeth pair. Is it normal wear? I just don’t understand how that could happen. Is it time to replace the wheel? If so it might be a good time to look at alternative designs from those after market companies. If u have any good experience with them plz advice. Thx. Erwin

Never seen that before
What model?
How many hours ?

It is wear and tear, but whether or not it’s normal depends on how many hours are on the machine. My guess is that it is normal. Notice how the more aggressive teeth have much more wear than the second and third pairs that follow. Those teeth take the brunt of the abuse and so does the wheel at that point. That is a very thin wheel though.

We have probably 1,200 hours on our old Rayco and I’d say the wheel wear is worse than yours. Still works just fine.

Thx guys. it's a 2008 Vermeer sc60TX with 950 hours. it's the original Vermeer wheel. when wear gets so bad, start affecting balance, I'm get an after market one.

That is normal wear, we run a grinder with Greenteeth and the wheel wear pattern is similar. As long as it’s not affecting the strength of the wheel, I don’t see it as a big concern, but it may be a good idea to fill those holes with a hard surfacing buildup using a stick welder.

The more sand/abrasives in your soil, the worse the wear will be, but hard surfacing will slow it down greatly.

I can't tell from the pic if the mounting holes for the cutter blocks are evenly-spaced pairs or just evenly spaced. You might be able to shift the blocks one hole to even out the wear on the wheel.

You can’t shift the teeth, they are in a staggered row, with each pair progressively closer to the rim.

Reach is right, hard face it on a regular Basis and get a few hundred hours more from it. Try to use one stick for each side to keep the balance.
