Question about HRC possible defect

Just bought a piece of Teufelberger HRC to try out. Haven’t used this cord before, but the cover appears to have a defect right in the middle of the section I got. (There’s also a very slight bulge at that spot, in case that’s not visible in the photo.) Any thoughts on whether this is an issue or will it sort itself out once I tie it in a hitch? Or should I request a replacement (only bought enough for one hitch cord)?

1) I would send a photo to whatever company you bought it from and ask for a replacement. They are probably not going to want to spend the money to ship one hitch cord back to them, and not be able to sell it. Then you can practice on the no good one.

2) It is probably alright to use as is, but I'm not going to commit to that.

Thanks. I was thinking that’s what I’d do. Especially not being familiar with this particular cord, I wasn’t too keen on trusting my life to my own “it’s probably fine” assessment.

Maybe see if you can get the fuzzy section of cover to milk past the possible bulge in the core. If there is no bulge in the core, it looks like too much of the Nomex, which could be tucked back under the cover. A bulge in the core might not be good, or correctable.

So I milked the cover back and there doesn’t appear to be any issue with the core. On closer inspection, it seems like there’s just a tuft of extra nomex on one of the strands. I don’t think I can shove it back inside without leaving a bulge and trying to remove it seems like it would end up cutting a strand. Any thoughts? Thanks

Actually, after all this, I just reviewed the splicing instructions and realized I’ve got enough cover on one side of the defect to make an e2e anyway. Was thinking I might try it out in some different knotted configurations, but I guess the decision has been made for me. :)
Still curious whether someone else would use it this way though…

Is it possible the tuft could be pulled slight and cut off, might be a loose part of strand that doesn’t affect the integrity of the cover?

I decided to experiment with this after realizing I could eventually cut that section of cover off completely anyway and I discovered that it was just a bunch of extra fiber spun up around a single strand. I was able to carefully cut it off and mostly got the strand to reseat in the cover. Probably not the best use of my time, but curiosity took hold. Now I'll probably just cut it all off and splice it anyway :ROFLMAO:

I would climb on that all day everyday. HRC is hands down the toughest hitchcord out there. Smooth as silk too....if the right hitch and host rope is used. I need to get back on it. But I am an epicord 9.3 addict.....
