Prusik and Aluminum Snap

I've always wondered how they could splice two locking brummels to an aluminum snap like this. Then i looked closer. The leg with the shrink wrap/label has a locking brummel but the other is just two brummels and a bury. Is this standard protocol?

So, in a nutshell (as I've heard Moray say many times), the locking brummels are NOT absolutely necessary? Just more secure, but actually weaker than a straight bury? And I guess a shorter bury is possible with locking brummels in the mix?

Yes - It's not impossible to do 2 locked Brummells, but darn close!

Oh really?

That is correct. Straight bury is stronger. LB is more secure.

Most manufacturers recommend a NON locked splice. I'll take the lock any day. I believe we are at more risk of a non stitched splice falling apart than we are a locked splice getting pulled to point of breaking

Nick, I stitch all my buries. I'm guessing you're worried about those who don't, or who do it wrong. Has improper stitching been a problem? 0r have you seen other issues in particular that concern you?

So even after a bury has "set" (as I've heard it called) and stitching was removed, it could still slip?

REALLY bad splices:
What common mistakes have you seen that we could learn from?

For us mere splicing mortals

Correct. Straight bury on 16 strand rope. See samson's directions. They are the best 16 strand directions out there.

But if you did...you wouldn't be the first to locking brummell a 16 strand splice

Wonder if a ring would pass through the one ended locking brummel with out a re-weave on 1/2" tenex tec ?
was going to try it this wahy to use the small ring girthed to a piece for throw line to wiggle it through.

Reversing the lock
