pruning palms in wailea, maui

i had a blast today pruning 10 palms with ocean vistas in these million dollar estates. the first 9 didnt have any edible nuts. just seeds and flowers but the last one had over 400 pounds of coconuts with 5 racks of 6-8 20lb nuts on each rack.

heres me starting the prune one on the first batch of trees.

The green coconuts make a refreshing drink. I flew with a native pilot (Nard Pugyao) to the Isneg people in the Philippines, and the village head man ordered an underling to fetch us a drink from the very tall palms near the riverbank. That climber looped a small vine rope around his ankles to hold them together, and using only his bare hands and feet climbed right to the top and twisted us off several. They then chopped off the tops of each to make a sort of large cup and we each had a cool, thirst quenching drink.

let me make one thing clear before i get bashed about spike climbing a palm. palms are not the same as trees. they do not have the ill effects that trees get from spiking. you cause more damage to pruning a tree then you do spiking up a palm stem.
on to the other reason for spike climbing palms.
when you have 30 palms to do in one day and do it on a regular basis, there is no way in hell you'd get it done with setting an SRT line every palm. no one NO ONE here pays over $100 per palm. because they make soo little and create ALLOT of work for you and the ground guys you need to work fast. luckly most of the palms at the resorts are well maintained so every 6 month visits are easy but when you get palms that have not been cleaned for years and are full of crap, it is more work then just cutting a few low hanging fronds off. you need to take out all the flower pods, fronds growing lower then the 10:00 and 2:00 positions, any un opened seed pods, tear off all the old rotten and brown boots from previously removed fronds. sometimes they give with just a tug, other times you need to cut them with your hand saw. palms clog your handsaw pretty bad when cutting the fronds and seed pod stems.

anyway, long story short. i have been climbing and trimming palms for longer then i have been doing trees and i have been doing them since i was 16 for my uncle noah's landscaping company here on the islands. that being said, unless you have been doing palms for years, i dont wanna hear about spike climbing palms being a shocker to you. i could see climbing a tree with spikes being of huge concern and a miss practice but ask anyone who trims palms for a living. they will tell you how grinding and messy the work is. spiking is safer and faster.

I hear you Josh , it's no way to not use spikes on all the palms. I trim about 200 to 250 palms a yr and this yr I try and did do all my palms with out using hooks , it's tough but it can be done .

you take care , Mahalo. later in SO-CAL

i usually talk alot of crap on here about how good of a tree guy i am when im still a noob but palms are different and i can honestly say they are hard work since i have 6 years of trimming coconut palms under my belt.

i have been doing them for 6 years straight and the only palms i dont spike are anything other than coconut palms and washingtonia palms. everything else is SRT climbed or if accessible for the rental spider lift.

id like to hear of the ill effects of spiking if you can add your input. besides crown rot which can be treated by disinfecting your tools with lysol and bleach, what is the big issues that you have heard of.
remember coconut trees have been spiked for decades and are still alive and standing.

Spiking cocos is the standard in Hawaii. A lot of the bigger companies have the tall lifts 70+ so they can do the majority of their palm work without having to spike.

I've seen coconut palms riddled with woodpeeker and spike holes that have been standing for years through many storms. If you ever tried to put your spike through an old spike wound you'll find it's hard as nails. They don't compartmentalize like trees, but they do have something that protects them...I just don't know what. That said, it is not an exceptable work practise to spike palms.

I also spike a few palms that have no access for a lift and are in difficult areas where Ddrt would reduce my production, so if the client does not want them spiked, they would have to pay more for Ddrt...and some do!

joshuastrees, I've never in my 19yrs seen a palm develop poor health from being spiked, but i will search the university of Florida sites for documented research on spiking palms.

do you know that spikes hurt the coconut palm stems? the spike holes never heal do to the fact that they dont have a cambium, xylum and phloem layer to aid in healing process for wounds.

tree stands like the ones used for hunting are faster safer and do not damage the coconut stems. i am an ISA certified arborist here on maui and would never spike a coconut tree. climb safe bra

Sometimes eight months feels like forever . . .

I think the important thing to remember is the same thing SZ told you to watch for in that other, now deleted, thread. Spend more time learning and sharing in the industry, and less time going to war.

i dont know why no matter what i post, even if it is out of good intention, i allways get flamed about something. i posted this as showing pics of some awsome coconut palms i worked on this past week and instead of getting complimens i get flamed. thats unfair dont ya think?

Hahaha - flaming. It's internet forum lingo for verbal abuse. I've most often heard it used in MMA forums. And no, Josh, it isn't unfair. What's unfair is you "flaming" someone else for something you do yourself (and lying about yourself in the process). In fact, isn't this a violation of the ISA code of ethics? Technically I guess it isn't because you never signed it. They only ask Certified Arborists to sign it. ISA might wanna know about this before you sit for the exam though.

Bottom line, Josh, stop trying to be someone you're not.

The palm work looked like fun by the way.

im sorry for lying. i wanna become an accomplished tree guy soo bad and ill be honest, im a cocky person and talk all big when im just a noob and you all know it. maybe i should stay off the buzz like i said before, and try to do and focus on my own life like JP says i should do. its hard cause this place is soo addicting but i know this is not a forum for socializing, its for tree work which i dont know anything about.

truth is im far from becoming a cert arborist and over prune stuff allot with the exception of palms. anyway, ill hold my tongue and stay off posting here until i have something good to post. until i become certified, i should stop talking from an authoritative position. im a nobody and dont even matter. im just another wanna be tree guy with some saws and climbing gear and thats the honest truth. i am really sorry for my presence here causing drama. it only maks me look bad since i have nothing to back myself up with. ill wait till i grow up a bit more and then you might here back from me.
