problem with my 044

my 044 will worm up then die and I cant get it to start back up. I think it my be a bad crank seal what are your thoughts? if it is a crank seal do I need to open up the saw or can it be replaced from the out side. Thanks for your help

Fuel system first. Then ignition.

When your seals are gone your saw sucks air and won't idle down.

You have a fuel problem somewhere.

Check this also, the early 044's were very known for breaking the crank pin where it joins the rod to the crankshaft , I have seen quite a few of these problems when that saw was around more , saw would start and idle but as soon as you took it up above idle then tried to go back to idle the one side of the crank would turn and saw would quit as now the ignition timing is totally wrong , get the 2 crank halves back in line and saw will run again

pretty much a new saw , you would need a new crank , crankcase gasket , you might as well put in a new set of seals and crankshaft bearings will your in there , just pull the rewind off saw and the bar and chain and most likely the drive so you can get a hold of the clutch grab a hold of flywheel and see if you can get it to spin one way or the other without turning the clutch , most pins break on flywheel side in motor on the crank but make sure you try both ways incase the pin didnot break flush and straight , I'm hoping you just need a carb kit or something like that
