Seeing as you are not comfortable trimming near power lines try calling your local utility and get them to trim them back for free. As for spikes it's utility arboriculture which is a completely different field as arboriculture itself. you're always thinking of your own safety and ground crew as apposed to the health of the tree so wear spikes if you have to.
