Possibly the biggest English Walnut tree ever

We have black walnut trees that get that big and bigger up here. In Hillsboro where I grew up there is a tree with a black walnut trunk with English walnut grafted on at around 40 feet so the entire mid canopy is English walnut and then the original trunk continues so the upper canopy is black walnut. It is around 100 feet tall with a similar crown spread.

That’s incredible. Would have loved to see how they did a graft at 40’! That would be a sizable Scion to rootstock I would imagine.

I have often wondered about that whole thing, as I have seen lots of high grafts here; like over 8' off the ground, sometimes 10'-12'. How? Why?

The most vigorous and easily grafted wood is at the tips, (at least in my apple/pear world)
do they use cleft grafts on nut trees? If so I would assume some "nut" got to the the highest working spot and made the graft on the smallest wood they could?

Other than having to carry around a ladder to make grafts higher than you can otherwise reach...
