Please identify this insect-

I found these insects today on 3 beautiful trees beside my house in the city of Chicago.
I was removing expired signage tied and stapled to the trees by the city.
When I removed the sign there were dozens of these insects swarming under the sign.
When I returned to take a picture they were all gone but this one. I think they all burrowed into the trees.
I'm so upset. What are these? Is there anything I can do to help save these beautiful trees?

Thanks for your help.

Yep earwig. No worries except they like areas with decaying wood and organic matter. Any big wounds or visible decay evident on the tree?

No visible decay on the trees I can see. But lots of old houses! I'm going to do some reading on Earwigs.
Thanks so much for your prompt replies.
