please be careful!!!

they kicked the lowest guys out knowing after the bid they didn't have a clue. one guy put 6gs on it! one put 7gs! wtf were they thinking! this thing was around 100' tall and wide!!!! it was like five large trees on one stem over four backyards, 30' over the triple phase with 20' of clearance (the power line trimmer said they wouldn't touch the tree) three lay down areas all around 10' x 10'. The job was fun until the trunk:-), then the work started. the rest of the tree got cut into fire wood by cutting rounds and dicing them up into chunkable pieces that could be tossed on to the crash pad.

would you put those into the side of the cookie? and would you slope the cut so the cookie would side off instead of notching?

I would probably put them on the side of the cut (never actually did this procedure, just talked about it with another climber once) and tie my bowline / knot encompassing them like a bow cleat, and the rope is affixed tot he bolts than by wraps on the piece, or the use of an eye bold screwed into the wood and just tied off the to the eye.

Did you get any pics Jeff? Sounds like a nasty one. How did you get the wood out? Manual or could you use a skid steer? Did you do all the climbing or did you trade out?

DUDE really? have you not ever had to log dolly a tree out? that really shows your experience level with working in tight city locations. We do a lot of these(the guys hate them). by the way, the job took a really long time and there was no other way to minimize the yard damage and retain one rose bush and one jap maple and the back yard will still have to be aerated and seeded from the saw dust and foot traffic. believe it or not we donated most of the wood to "firewood for missions" a local guy that sells firewood to build cisterns for impoverished cities in mexico and spread the Gospel. we chipped 44 yards of chips, two full loads of cut up blocks and rake up/saw chips; he took four 16' trailers of wood and we still have one more chip truck load of material on the ground. when i bid the job i hit the chips on the nose and figured 60 yards of wood and saw dust. sorry you haven't had to work like a hebrew slaving on the pyramids, but the next one of these i get i will invite you down for a trip through the hurt locker. think i got one coming up in a couple of weeks that is going to be bid for eight days and a hundred yard drag out. hollow and wind fractured with no yard damage or damage to the understory trees allowed. no heavy equipment access. lots of plywood lots of cussing and dragging.

These pics don't do this tree any justice.

Hey Jeff, I can relate to the small yard, no power equipment access scenario. Working in Downtown T.O. we had many removals where wood had to be hauled by log dollies between house with not much more than 3' of space. Lot's of joy.

Btw, the attachment didn't work, I get a page not found message.

Welcome to my world folks, very standard here even minus the log dolly. The trees are not as big I am sure but still big logs and nuff brush. We sometimes have to quarter logs to lift them to the truck out front and up inclines to boot. Add the heat and things get maniac. I believe you Jeff and can sympathize. Tight small yards are the norm here. We are one of the world's most densely populated countries in the world.

With respect JeffL, a 40" dbh tree and a 70" dbh tree are quite different.

A 40" cylinder of white pine 1 foot tall weighs 325lbs, a 70" cylinder of the same white pine 1 foot tall weighs 994lbs.

According to Jeff C he took out a 70" DBH Red oak. From his posts I gather the butt log was 70" at the big end, 48" at the small end and 35' long...thats an estimated weight of 42,111lbs. Assuming that someone can handle 350lbs on a ball cart thats 120 quartered chunks of red oak ball carted out.

For reference a 1' long section of 70" Oak weighs in at 1637lbs, but keep in mind Jeff had to take it out on a log cart, which from Sherrill is 33" wide so quite a bit of quartering there as well.

Funny bit of info the Boxer 300 series of loaders are 34.5" wide. I am willing to bet that the width of a 33"log dolly ends up as more than 34.5 with 2 pairs of knuckles wrapped around the handles.

Ditch witch 650 = 36" wide

Then again... I am sure that it was likely a 30" alley jeff took the wood through and he probably used one of these: http://www.harborfreight.com/heavy-duty-hand-truck-95061.html

But hey what do I know, its just math right?

OMG: this just in, they actually RENT boxer 300 models in Memphis... where does Jeff live? Jeez they ARE like $100/day that is a prohibitve cost compared to dollying the wood out.

Like I said before, either a LIAR or an IDIOT. There is no shame in the second Jeff we all play the hand we are dealt but no reason to make up silly stories to impress people on the net.

Me I could'nt give a chit who does what, if a dude says he did something I say good for him. If he is lying that's at him, doesnt change my life one bit. I deal with facts and the facts are that Barbados is the 9th most densely populated country in the world, which means I work in really tight spaces on beautiful trees in some crazy hot weather. Hot is an unserstatement. Right now it's intolerable and that is FACT.

No tom no mini access customer didn't want equipment on the lawn thats one of the main reasons she went with us, that and we didn't leave her with a swimming pool sized hole after the trunk was felled like all the other tree services wanted to do. I measured the cut at dbh today: 65"!!!! wtf all by hand. hit chain link fence while making the bottom cuts. How do you down size pics on a mac it has been a minute since i posted photos all i got is a couple from when we started and i will take a pic when we finish the light landscaping we have left tomorrow afternoon. peace and by the way, I love the block feature!!! :-)

223, apparently you don't know Jeff. He's a solid dude, and a badass tree man that knows the business well. You throw insults around pretty easily, I bet you wouldn't do it if you met the man.
