Petzl Foot Ascender Kickout Solution

Nicely done! As mentioned by others I like the easy kick out "feature" of the Pantin but it's good to have the option to lock it in, especially for example in conifer crowns where the tail of the rope often gets redirected to angles that make accidental kick outs happen more often. As far as Pantin rope damage goes, a friend used my 150' Tachyon natural crotched for 3 hours of a maple takedown. Three hours of that put more wear in my rope than two years of Pantin climbing. Just wanted to put things in perspective ;-)

Thanks Andrew. By "shredding" i mean when the pantin pops off unexpected snagging a couple threads and then applying your body weight on each step creating knicks in your rope. The most frustrating thing other than accidentally cutting your rope.

My only question for you Mr. Hoffman is why are you wearing a Bartlett shirt?

Lol...my reply was going to something along the lines of..."someone at bartlett know about climbing?

moss, just wondering if that was natural crotched ddrt or srt? I imagine dynamic ddrt rubbing the cambium. That can toll a rope. I like the pantin.

with the HAAS there is no need for a handled ascender. With The HAAS your left leg will match the efforts of your right leg which leaves very little for your upper body to have to handle, your arms really just keep you balanced mostly. also, with this system at any given moment you can weight either foot. this also adds to stability.

I think it will just get in the way, but build your system so it works for you.
keep in mind that a big benefit of the HAAS is that there is nothing above your system, so to put a hand ascender up there kinda negates this benefit as well.

when setting up your chest tether system for single rope work, try a crossing webbing sling or some crossed loop. By tethering your hitch mechanism to your chest high and tight it forces it to work like a chest roller and helps to keep you upright. if you do the over opposite shoulder with your lanyard it will keep your hitch mechanism up but not necessarily close to you. I will do the over should deal for short ascents, but its not nearly as efficient or stable.

Natural crotched DRT. Yep, wears a rope fast.

Caleb, are you using the current version Pantin? If so I agree it sucks, making it smaller, more flimsy and making the webbing straps lighter did nothing good for it. As mentioned doesn't have an opening to lock the cam either. My Pantin is around 8 years old, love it.
