Backing up an ascentree is going to depend on the system you are using. If you are using one line over a limb as your doubled rope you need to back it up with a seperate device. One thing that I have been playing with a little more is the paralel backups. This is when you have two seperate ropes over the crotch and one cam backs up the other cam no need for additional devices. I accomplish this by pulling my snake bite TO the limb/crotch, tie a butterfly and attach my climbing line to this loop with a biner or bowline. I then pull the butterfly over the limb. Then I set up the snake bite just like anyother single line, with a sling and grigri or running bowline at the base. So when you put the ascentree on the line there is two seperate ropes one for each cam. I will try and get some pics of this as my explanation probably isnt very clear.
I also like the shunt as a back up, just the set up used is non rescueable from the ground. But I still use it.
