Painting Gear/Hardware

I am wanting to color code my gear to avoid mixing it up with others. Mainly I want to keep my carabiners under observation. I have access to plenty of neon orandge tree marking paint but not sure if it will stick. Any suggestions on what to use for this?

Yup...pink has worked for a long time...unless I'm mixing gear with Scotty Olson I'm OK.

When I get gear that might be mixed with other's I'll give it a light shot of spray paint. I try not to get much in the mechanisms.

With a lot of use most of the paint wears off. There is always traces in nooks and crannies. If there is engraving it will fill with paint too.

IN ALL of the years of painting I've never had a problem with it gumming up any mechanisms.

Florescent paints are sure bright but they don't seem to stick as well as plain old enamels...which are usually cheaper too. They seem to powder off off too easily.

Finger nail polish is another thing that works too. Find a place to put some dots or stripes.

Why the color pink? Does it lessen the chance of theft? What if you're working near a Susan G Komen crowd? You'll be stripped down to a rope and underwear in ten seconds. Watch out.

Hmmm...things could be worse...at least I might still have a rope, or fig leaves.

When I looking at the rainbow of spray paint cans on the rack at the Borg I thought of florescents at first. Too common...then I realized that the Manly-Man Pink would be a good choice. Bright and not too many guys would use pink...except Scotty I found out a few years later.

Maybe they should try it in law enforcement? Sometimes an arrest leads to a struggle for the gun, but maybe the perp would think twice if he spotted a hot pink glock in the holster instead.

Finally. A voice of reason in the current frenzy over gun control.

Paint Pens

I did not hear this mentioned, Paint Pens.

You get them at WalMart. They're not big ink pens, they have paint in them.

I like to use paint to do what you guys are talking about, marking biners and climbing gear, but also for marking saws and pole tools and etcetera.

Here, I mark with an ink marker because ID'ing this defunct bar is not worth the price of the paint.

Wank, because I had a little explosion at the tip. LOL

Re: Paint Pens

And for marking chain. I can't tell you how many times I've marked 84 or 115 driver links and marked with a round file, and when it comes time to break a chain, can't find the mark.

As you can see here, not any chance for doubt.

Note that the paint pen is bent?
This one lasted through the whole Winter, and it took smushing the pen with a plier, but I still managed to paint what I needed that day.

Paint pen is a nice one to have in your kit. Pretty affordable, 3 or 4 bucks

Options are good.

Re: Paint Pens

Finger nail polish, I use it on all my rock climbing gear. Mark the spine wherever there are raised or recessed lettering. Holds up really well, and you can get into the relm of glitter like I have and put Tom's pink to shame.
